The transportation supply chain is still adjusting to the tumultuous events of the past year,
including the widening of the Panama Canal, the
Hanjin Shipping bankruptcy and the launch of the
global vessel-sharing alliances. These developments are unfolding as shipping lines are emerging from six consecutive years of financial losses.
Weaker lines are being acquired. The fewer but
more financially-stable carriers are deploying
ever-larger vessels to reduce their unit costs.
Marine terminal operators also are consolidating
to gain economies of scale and leverage.
The impact on the inland supply chain of
