Optimism Builds for
Intermodal Freight

ptimism about intermodal shipment activity for the final months of 2017 and the year
ahead is growing for nearly every intermodal service provider, based on third-quarter results
and commentary from more than a dozen sources.
The broadest indicator of the stronger market was the
6.3 percent increase in freight reported in IANA's third quarter
Intermodal Market Trends and Statistics report, including growth
in international and domestic containers as well as trailers.
This third quarter growth was the strongest pace in three years,
helped by comparisons to a weaker 2016 period over the same
time frame. October intermodal traffic was even stronger,
increasing 8.2 percent.
"The industry's future looks solid," IMTS reported, noting that
the last time that all container and trailer shipments rose was
six years ago. "For the full year [2017], total intermodal growth

North American intermodal freight continued to show strength in the fall.
The 8.2 percent year-over-year increase in October was the fastest monthly pace in 2017. Intermodal volume has
increased 4.7 percent over a 10-month period this year, above the comparable period of 2016.
The third quarter volume growth was 6.3 percent, the strongest quarterly year-over-year growth in the past three years.
The September freight volume rose 4.2 percent.
American Trucking Associations' tonnage index showed similar results. The ATA index climbed 9.9 percent in October,
7.4 percent in September and 5.8 percent in August, all on a year-over-year basis.
