Freight Report
Intermodal freight volume increased in 2017 year-over-year to a total of 17.9 million shipments, which was a 4.7
percent increase for the full year. The full-year totals in each category included 1.31 million trailers, up 6.4 percent and 7.56
million domestic containers, up 2.7 percent. All domestic equipment increased 3.2 percent to 8.87 million. A total of 9.07
million ISO containers were moved, up 6.2 percent.
During both November and December, both domestic and international freight increased in all categories.
The December total of 1.49 million shipments was a 4.2 percent increase. Trailers rose at the fastest pace, recording
9.1 percent growth. ISO shipments rose 6.0 percent.
In November, shipments totaled 1.52 million, a 5.0 percent improvement over the same month of 2016. Trailer
shipments surged, with a 15 percent increase, while ISO containers gained 6.3 percent.
