Freight Report
The pace of intermodal growth increased in February as 2018 got off to a strong start. Year-over-year monthly
rail traffic grew, January 2017 to January 2018, by 5.8 percent, to 1.51 million. February 2017 to 2018 year-over-year
increased, by 7.8 percent, to 1.46 million.
International led the way in February with an 8.3 percent increase, which may have been helped by trends related to
the Lunar New Year in Asia, which was celebrated late in January. Production typically spikes just before the holiday, in
advance of a shutdown for a week or more after the celebration.
Total intermodal shipments reached 2.97 million in the first two months of 2018, a 6.8 percent year over year gain.
Trailer shipments rose more than 10 percent in both months on that basis, and domestic container volume improved
6.6 percent in February, faster than the 6.1 percent uptick in January.
