The Ontario Broker - February 2018 - 23

Following RIBO, Brian returned to the IBAO to join
the Executive as Second Vice-President. He became
President in January.

forgotten to turn them back on. "I was two hours
late for the call, but I ended up spending eight hours
at that fire."

Brian seems to have always been involved in some
way, whether within the Spencerville community
or the broker channel. Even as IBAO President he
hasn't given up his other commitments - sitting
on the Board of the Leeds & Grenville Insurance
Brokers Association and the Spencerville Mill
Foundation, acting as Secretary/Treasurer for the
Leeds & Grenville Mutual Aid Fire Association,
Secretary/Treasurer for the Cemetery Board and
Chair of the Board at his local church. He coaches
his son's hockey team and the local Timbit team.
He's also a member of the Optimist Club, a volunteer
organization that promotes positive vision in youth.

Brian's enthusiasm for helping others comes
through in every story.

"In Spencerville, if something needs to be done you
don't run to the municipality, you do it yourself. You
recruit and organize. Take the Mill Committee. One
of our clients - the main philanthropist in town -
came into the brokerage one day and said I should
join the Board. If Earl asks you to get involved, you
get involved."

Every year the IBAO President drives a theme to
focus the association's resources and initiatives.
How appropriate that Brian's revolves around one
of his passions.

I ask what Brian gets out of all this giving back. "I
think volunteering is the best way for communities
to grow. You always get more out of it than you put
in. It's the same with the
IBAO - you gain so much
knowledge, you develop so
many friendships. When
you get involved with
something, you get a say on
how things should work.
You get to determine destiny
in a way."

"A situation that happens quite frequently is getting
called to a house fire... you're there most of the night.
You come down the driveway and an adjuster you know
is walking towards the house to talk to your client.
Fires tend to be crazy situations, but for me it's about
being there for people in times of need. At the barn
fire the other night, my client was very appreciative
of me being there. Before I left, the adjuster had
already arrived, so he knew we were on top of it. It's
reassurance and compassion. I like to help out."

"Feed the Fire Within emphasizes three areas:
providing young brokers opportunities to thrive -
we need to attract and retain this talented group to
create a continuous cycle within the channel; getting
involved in our communities - our clients support
us, so in turn we must support them; and turning
our focus to the consumer
- we need to offer them
the tools and the kind of
service they're looking for
in today's marketplace.
Technology
solutions
are key to well-rounded
customer service."

Firefighting is something
different. Being young,
it was very exciting. I
do a lot of things on the
firefighting side that I
wouldn't otherwise have
the opportunity to do.

Brian says he's also just
grown up this way. He's
been a member of the
Volunteer Fire Department
since he first moved back to
Spencerville. "Firefighting
is something different.
Being young, it was very
exciting. I do a lot of things on the firefighting side
that I wouldn't otherwise have the opportunity to
do."
With all those years of service, I ask about his
craziest firefighting story. "Hah. No cats in trees."

He recounts a story from earlier this year when an
insurance client called him in a panic because his
barn was on fire. Brian said he didn't believe him.
He hadn't gotten the page or any notifications on his
phone - he'd been in Toronto for IBAO meetings,
had turned his pager and notifications off and

How can the IBAO help
all types of brokerages
- small, large, rural,
urban, varying business
models? "By building and
maintaining our resources
like
technology
and
education, and providing
these resources to all
brokers within our membership. As an association
we encourage all of our members to get involved
in whatever interests them to help us drive the
industry forward."
On one hand Brian's a very focused and involved
individual, dedicating his time to giving back to
all the organizations and initiatives he surrounds
himself with. But the other side of Brian is a total
family man - he's married with four kids, three
daughters and a son, who I presume take after him
in many ways. "They all finished their high school
volunteer hours in grade nine, right off the bat.
