The Ontario Broker - June 2018 - 20

"Volunteering keeps me active. It's a small price to pay to stay connected, and it's an
opportunity to give back in a small way. Engaging with other brokers has opened so many
doors for me - I'm very thankful for that."
LIBA's Board is comprised of three Executives and five Directors. The Affiliate has over
350 members from 26 different offices.
"We get a lot of support from Principals," says MaryKate. "We encourage them to bring
their staff out to our events. Engaging the next generation of brokers is something we're
really keen on. It doesn't matter if they're fresh out of college or starting a second career -
we want to show these individuals what the broker channel is all about."
LIBA hosts a Meet the Grad night every March for graduates of Fanshawe's Business
Insurance program. They invite Principal Brokers to attend. "Many of us have hired grads
from that event - they don't always know what they want to be, so it's an opportunity to
recruit them into the broker channel."
Events are one of the main reasons LIBA won Affiliate of the Year. "Every year we try
different initiatives, but there are recurring ones - Motorcycle Ride for Dad, and our
annual food drive," says MaryKate. "One of our fundraising mandates is to drive support
locally. We try to find initiatives and causes near and dear to our hearts, right here in our
neighborhood. Every event needs some element of interaction and influence: engage
people, then give back."
"Motorcycle Ride for Dad is about being out in the local fairgrounds in our LIBA t-shirts
presenting a cheque," says D'Arcy. "We hosted a Broker Awareness Day where we walked
through the Home & Garden Show. We try to get the word out that brokers are here to
advocate on your behalf."
They recently introduced the LIBA Charity Fund for greater impact.
"In the past our donations have been split up among local community organizations that
might be overlooked. We donated BIP Blankets to a local women's shelter. We're
involved with the London Fire Department," says MaryKate. "But with this
fund we're working towards a bigger contribution. We've incorporated a
50/50 draw into our golf tournament and fundraise at some of our other
social events. We've got a ways to go until we reach our target but it's
something we're always working towards."
