WHAT STANDS OUT AS THE
#1 AREA OF IMPACT TO
INSURANCE?
GK: I'd say the impact on rented dwelling policies,
and the specific exclusions to growing marijuana.
The changing of the law will instigate a change in
wordings for most insurers, causing perhaps the
more immediate challenge to insurers.
MK: So far, the #1 area of impact is how insurers
are going to differentiate between recreational and
medical use.
CM: Some reports say current roadside testing
will detect cannabis in someone's system over the
last 30 days, which could have a large impact on
underage drivers whose license has zero tolerance
for cannabis in their system; they could be charged
for impaired driving even though they used
cannabis weeks prior.

WHAT'S THE TOP THING YOU
WANT BROKERS TO KNOW?
GK: It's not cut and dry. There will be challenges
for every broker to face with their clients. From
the change in coverage on a homeowner's policy to
how driving under the influence will be judged, the
impact is far and wide.
MK: As far as insurance policies are concerned,
cannabis will be treated very similarly to alcohol,
with the exception of medical usage.
CM: Even though there's much we don't know about
the new legalization and how it will impact our
industry, there will be tremendous opportunity for
the broker channel to provide advice and value to
our communities.

HOW DO YOU ANTICIPATE YOUR
COMMUNITY REACTING TO
LEGALIZATION? WILL CLIENTS
BE FORTHCOMING ABOUT PLANT
POSSESSION?

MK: I honestly don't know what the community
reaction to legalization will be. In smaller cities or rural
areas, I think there might be trepidation. As far as being
forthcoming about plant possession, people may be
timid about that information in the early stages.

GK: My community as a whole is fairly
conservative. General public opinion's been
against it. As far as being forthcoming, the same
client who "forgets" to disclose their speeding
tickets are just as likely to "forget" to disclose their
plant possession.

THERE WILL BE
TREMENDOUS
OPPORTUNITY
FOR THE
BROKER
CHANNEL
TO PROVIDE
ADVICE AND
VALUE TO OUR
COMMUNITIES.

CM: I don't think we'll see an immediate or large
impact in our community. The communities that are
getting Ontario Cannabis Store locations could have
greater immediate impact. I also expect there will
be large public debates in some communities where
retail locations will be in relation to other locations
such as schools and churches. I don't believe
recreational users will be instantly upfront about
their plants in conversation with their broker, but I
think legalization will encourage medical users to be
more forthcoming. This will help lessen the stigma of
growing plants in your home.

HOW WAS THE COURSE
DEVELOPMENT PROCESS?
GK: Being part of the process was great. It was an
excellent group to work with, and I think the IBAO
did a great job. The highlights were many, but to sum
it up, it was fun to see everyone react differently to
being on camera. Myles especially.
MK: It's always interesting being involved in
something that could change the face of our
province/country. The information developed in
this course is ground breaking. It was a lot of fun
learning how cannabis can and will impact the
insurance industry and its brokers. Watching Geoff
stumble through some of his lines during filming was
particularly funny.
CM: It was a great opportunity being involved in
course development. One of the highlights for me was
meeting with members of IBC and learning about the
size of this new cannabis market opening up.
