FLOODING HOMES & INBOXES:

HOW TO DEAL

WHAT KINDS OF WEATHER
EVENTS HAVE YOU BEEN SEEING
IN YOUR TERRITORY IN THE LAST

BE: The greater Ottawa area has witnessed
pretty harsh conditions over the past year,
starting with a tornado that unleashed six
micro bursts last September in the West
Carlton area. It left over 260,000 Ottawa
Hydro/Hydro One customers without
power and caused tens of millions of
dollars in damage to homes, businesses and
infrastructure.
We experienced one of the longest and
coldest winters to ever hit the region from
October to April. Three consecutive days
in January the temperature dropped to
minus 40 degrees. Mid-April the snow
started to melt, and the flooding began.
The Ottawa River swelled from Petawawa
to Hawkesbury, prompting the Mayor of
Ottawa to declare a State of Emergency and
call in the military. The city set up command
centres and received an overwhelming
response to a call for volunteers to fill and
place sandbags.
KM: Just over 12 months ago, increased
rainfall and severe flooding in Thamesville
trickled down to Chatham, causing people
to leave their homes and businesses. There
hasn't been any flooding this calendar year,

but fear and pessimism persist as we haven't
seen lake levels this high since 1986.
HOW ARE CONSUMERS
RESPONDING?

BE: The city set up a number of information
sessions for residents, and attendance has
been quite high. The Mayor of Ottawa, the
Canadian Red Cross, Ottawa Municipal
Services and the Insurance Bureau of
Canada all participate, presenting residents
with important information.
KM: I think if nothing else, customers
seem more aware of their coverage. They
understand, now more than ever, that water
is the main culprit of claims.
HOW ARE BROKERS
RESPONDING?

BE: They're pitching in at sandbag filling
sites and attending information sessions
hosted by the city alongside residents.
KM: Brokers are initiating the conversation.
Any broker who went through the last
round of claims, particularly in the Windsor
area, understands how heartbreaking it
is to inform clients that they opted out
of certain water coverages. The reality is
very present-brokers are getting a better
audience and taking advantage of it.
