PARLIAMENTARY ASSISTANT

Nina's parliamentary role is as Parliamentary Assistant
to the Minister of Economic Development, Job
Creation and Trade, which requires her to bring
investment to Ontario. Her experience as a broker plays
heavily into selling the province to investors.

Nina suggests that something similar could help
fill the talent gap in the broker channel. "When it
comes to training and retaining talent, you really
need to think outside the box. It would be great
to work with the younger generation who are
using technology in a much different fashion
than we did."

"When you come from a sales and marketing
background you can bring a lot of what you've learned
with you through your career. My role allows me to go
out and meet with industry experts and tell them why
Ontario is the best place to do business-it's a great
place to live, work and raise a family.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

"My riding is home to many of the pharmaceutical
companies. Soon after being elected they invited me
to meet and started educating me on the industry.
Part of my mandate is a life science strategy-to build
something where we can bring all the different sectors
of life science together in one location.

"Sometimes it's finding a long-term care bed
for a constituent or working with the Children's
Aid Society trying to find ways to keep families
together. The impact we make on people's lives is
quite significant.

"Recently I attended the MedTech Conference in
Boston, leading the Ontario delegation, which allows us
the opportunity to look for investment in Ontario. Next
year we're actually hosting this conference-it's the first
time it's been outside the US. It will bring some of the
biggest life science companies to Ontario."
SOLVING THE TALENT GAP

Much like the broker channel, one of the biggest
challenges facing the pharmaceutical industry
is attracting and retaining talent. Many of these
companies hire from around the province, but once
employees had enough experience they'd leave
Mississauga to move back to their communities.
Nina saw a solution for these companies that would
also help her constituents-building a local talent
pool.
"That was the birth of a new Life Sciences
Scholarship Program. In the first year we received
buy-in from eight companies. Twenty kids got
$4,000 each, plus they're going to get one-on-one
mentoring from these companies. All at no cost to
the taxpayer."

An MPP can be called upon by her constituents to
help in an extremely varied set of circumstances, some
of which may seem outside the duties of an MPP. But
those instances have been highlights for Nina.

"We had a constituent who was taken away by the
Children's Aid Society when he was very young.
He's been searching for his mother for about 20-25
years. Every government in the past has given up
and not been able to find her, but we did. Hopefully
now the mother and son will be able to build their
relationship together.
"We had one instance where a constituent collapsed
while he was in Alabama. He'd lost his memory. As
soon as it happened, we worked with the hospital
to get him back swiftly and into a hospital bed.
He's recovering, slowly regaining his memory and
physically fully able.
"We're not just sitting in the legislature passing bills, the
work we do with our local constituents is very crucial.
It's been a fantastic learning experience for me."
Going above and beyond and making herself available
is familiar work for Nina.
"You have to be available for your constituents or your
clients. I don't see it as being too different from my
role as a broker. I'm very privileged to be able to serve
and represent the people of Mississauga-Streetsville."
