local environment. I think about how Canada is
such a small player on the global environment.
What technologies are we able to bring to the
marketplace to make a difference? Taxing carbon
doesn't fix the problem but finding solutions to
single-use plastic might.
EM: Although all the speakers this year were
phenomenal, if I must pick a favourite it would have
to be David Chilton. To listen to such a successful
entrepreneur talk about his failures and successes,
and how being a minimalist has created less stress in
his life was a great takeaway this year.
DW: We've had some remarkable speakers and
political figures at Convention. One that particularly
piqued my interest was in the early 80s. He started
off by announcing that Bob Carter, IBAO CEO at
the time, wanted a copy of his speech, to which he
responded there was no copy, but at the end of his
speech he would provide copies in English, French
and German. I remember this so vividly because I
never have and never will like reading scripts! I can
still hear Bob muttering at me for going off script
when I gave required speeches-I always had to ad
lib as an act of rebellion.
WHAT WAS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT?

AC: Sharing time with my coworkers in a different
setting. We had the opportunity to get to know each
other on a personal level. During our bus ride, a
couple of tears were shed but we also had so much
fun. I respect them deeply and thank them immensely
for sharing this awesome experience with me.
BK: My most memorable moment was Gore
Mutual's Hospitality suite-having Steven Page
perform in such an intimate setting.
CM: I was 17 at my first Convention. Jamie Ostic
shared a scotch with me and my father in our hotel
room. He thought I was much older. I still see Jamie
and we laugh about that introduction.
EM: Having the opportunity to listen to David Chilton
was one of the most memorable moments I've had.

I FOUND IT INSPIRING
TO SEE SUCH A
STRONG COMMUNITY
WITHIN OUR INDUSTRY,
INCLUDING THE FACT
WE CONTINUALLY TRY
TO MAKE IT BETTER
AND LEARN FROM ONE
ANOTHER.

DW: Without question, becoming the first female
President of the association will always be my most
memorable moment. We finally got to break the
ceiling after 85 predecessors.
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE AT OUR
100TH CONVENTION NEXT YEAR?

AC: A representative from the provincial government
sharing insight on the place insurance in Ontario
occupies in their agenda and their strategy to address
the different issues in that regard. I'd also love to see
more CSRs be given the opportunity to attend-the
experience is priceless and adds so much value to the
perception we can have regarding the IBAO and its
purpose.
BK: There's always been a big focus on Personal
Lines and the changes it's endured. It'd be great to
see a bigger focus on Commercial Lines and how
this hard market is affecting business.
CM: Let's celebrate 100 years of success and share
best practices for another 100 years of success.
EM: It'd be great to have another speaker like David
Chilton. Since our industry is changing at such
a rapid speed, it's hard to say what topics should
be discussed. That said, James Cunningham is an
amazing MC!
DW: A capsule of our history over the last 100
Conventions, our achievements with the various
governments and our technology advances. We've
collected a huge quantity of pictures, so let's take them
out from under those moth balls and put them on
display. Perhaps that would help before your move?
