strengthen their broker partners' businesses.
Their Innovation Outpost in Kitchener and
Innovation Lab in Winnipeg are key drivers
of this initiative.
"Innovation happens in ecosystems as
people, ideas and technologies collide to
solve meaningful problems in new ways," said
David. "Wawanesa wanted to actively engage
in that ecosystem. To do that effectively,
we needed a presence in the Toronto-KW
technology corridor. The Corporate
Innovation program at Communitech gave
us not just a location but a framework and
approach to jump into the heart of Canada's
innovation ecosystem through the creation of
our Innovation Outpost in KW. The Outpost
supports our innovation mandate by linking
our Winnipeg Innovation Lab with the
broader ecosystem."
In one of the breakout rooms, adorned with
a life-size mural of Iron Man, we received a
live demo by Joseph D'Souza, Founder &
CEO of ProNavigator, of Ask Sage, a product
that helps brokers quickly get answers
to product-related questions. David

counts this product among the Innovation
Outpost's big, early successes.
"We worked closely with ProNavigator early
on in their product development cycle for
Sage because we believed in their vision
of using AI to empower brokers to better
serve their customers. We're excited to
see the success they're having and more
importantly, see the benefits realized by the
broker channel. We've also been working
closely with our claims team on new
technologies we believe can improve the
customer experience."
Though the Outpost is new as of last year,
Wawanesa's investment in innovation has
had an impact on the perception of the
company within the industry.
"We've seen measurable increases in
customer and broker satisfaction, so I think
the word's out that Wawanesa is serious
about innovation," said David. "While our
Innovation group's been on the forefront of
the change, it's been a sustained effort by the
entire company on our shared goal of being

an innovative insurance company that's
moving the dial."
After a field trip back in school, we'd
typically have to say what we learned from
the experience. I learned a lot from our day
at Communitech with Wawanesa. And I saw
a lot of cool things. But my biggest takeaway
is how important innovation is in keeping
the broker channel vital.
"Our brokers are critical to our success
as a company," said David. "Since we've
launched our Innovation group, we've been
privileged to have so many brokers share
their knowledge, insights, ideas and feedback
as we work together to find new and better
ways to serve our customers. I encourage
any broker who's interested in innovating
to reach out to us through their BDR so we
can look for ways to collaborate. I strongly
believe that together, we can harness the
power of digital transformation to create an
awesome experience for our policy holders."
