Philosophie du design
Persistant longtemps après les forces qui ont contribué à leur création, le
design et l'architecture servent souvent de baromètre aux climats politiques
actuels et précédents. Laetitia Laurent, designer de la Floride du Sud,
directrice et designer en chef chez Laure Nell Interiors, philosophe sur le
sujet. « Aristote a été le premier philosophe à introduire l'idée que les villes
devraient être façonnées en fonction du régime politique de l'époque »,
fait-elle remarquer. « Paris, où j'ai grandi, reflète cette notion comme aucune
autre ville au monde ne le fait. Une ligne droite relie la Place de la Concorde
et ses obélisques égyptiens vieux de 3 000 ans à l'Arc de Triomphe, qui
s'élève pour commémorer ceux qui sont morts pour la France pendant
la Révolution française et les guerres napoléoniennes, et à la Défense,
l'important quartier des affaires de la ville. »

Peter Coffman fait écho à la position du célèbre philosophe grec,
réfléchissant tout haut, « Ce que nous construisons reflète toujours les idées,
les aspirations, les moyens, la technologie et les valeurs de ceux qui ont le
pouvoir et la capacité de construire. Cela ne change pas ; mais ce qui fluctue à
un certain degré, ce sont ceux qui détiennent ce pouvoir et cette capacité. »
Au Moyen Âge, c'étaient l'Église et l'aristocratie. Au 19e siècle, l'Empire
britannique a adopté le style gothique comme signature et s'en est servi pour
imprimer une image de l'« anglitude » dans tout l'empire. Mussolini a utilisé
une version épurée et sévère de l'architecture classique pour ériger son
régime fasciste en héritier du 20e siècle de l'Empire romain. « En particulier
dans les contextes impériaux, l'architecture a toujours été un puissant outil
de communication de masse », indique Peter Coffman.
