And
Good Design
for All
For decades, the design profession has debated the merits of the democratization of design.
Luminaries like Philippe Stark made it a tenet of their practices to make good design available
to a wide swath of people, and we've watched brands expand into varying levels of the
marketplace with varying levels of success. But, when we've said "good design is for everyone,"
have we really meant everyone? Shouldn't we share the far-reaching, evidence-based benefits
of good design with the entire population?
In this issue of i+D, we take a look at places that may not quickly come to mind when people
think of interior design, but where design decisions make critical impressions and have the
ability to not only impact a person's present state but also their future success, wellbeing, and
participation in society. We open the doors to correctional facilities and discuss the design moves
being made to encourage rehabilitation as opposed to punishment ("Correcting Corrections,"
p. 28). And we step inside shelters and affordable and supportive housing projects to witness how
compassionate, informed design can make a world of difference in the lives of people experiencing
hardships of many kinds ("Take Refuge," p. 34). We also celebrate the 30th anniversary of the
Americans with Disabilities Act with a look at how far accessible design has come and where it
can go next ("Accessible Milestone," p. 42). The designers involved in these projects are not alone
in wanting to both better the lives of those who occupy the spaces they design and inspire the next
generation of design professionals to use their creative talent for the benefit of all.
At a time when compassion for one another comes with a six-foot safety zone, the power of
creativity and thoughtful design decisions is paramount and immediate, but the decisions made
today will also have lasting impact. All communities can benefit from design's insight and
expertise, perhaps most particularly those that are oftentimes overlooked.

CURVES AHEAD
In-person events may have halted, but virtual product launches
have marched on with many introducing fluid, curvilinear
shapes and playful hues-a less rigid presentation that's a welcome
counter to the boxed-in restrictions of our current daily existence.
These recent releases aim to infuse spaces with joy, creative comfort,
and a little forward motion.
BOMBOM Collection by Joana Vasconcelos for Roche Bobois
is a series of sofas with organic, generous shapes that can be
configured to suit one's wishes. The mobile backs allow for a truly
customized and re-customizable design.
Known for his sculptural seating made using welded American coins,
furniture designer Johnny Swing opened a solo show with the gallery
R & Company at 64 White Street in New York in September. "Fast
and Present: New Work by Johnny Swing" exhibits his love
of aquatic forms with a suite of seven nesting zoomorphic works
called Septem Maria (Seven Seas).
Moon Range from Sandler is the creation of award-winning
designer Mac Stopa and part of the Tonon Collection.
The semicircular forms are inspired by the phases of the moon.
Inspired by the pull top of a vintage Coke can, Toof by Marrimor
Objects is one-part table, one-part pouf, and it nestles
together to form a rounded side table or functions separately
when both elements are called for.
