FUTURE CITY
IF A SUSTAINABLE DESTINATION WHERE CULTURAL,
ECOLOGICAL, AND ECONOMIC GROWTH IS SECURE AND PEOPLE
AND NATURE CO-EXIST IN A BIODIVERSE ISLAND LOCATION
SOUNDS LIKE A FANTASY, THEN THINK AGAIN. THAT VERY IDEAL
IS THE BASIS OF BIODIVERCITY, THE PROPOSED COLLECTIVE
VISION OF BIG-BJARKE INGELS GROUP, HIJJAS ARCHITECTS AND
PLANNERS, AND RAMBOLL FOR A GROUP OF THREE DIVERSE,
ARTIFICIAL ISLANDS BUILT OFF THE SOUTHERN SHORE OF
PENANG ISLAND. THE MASTERPLAN IS THE WINNING PROPOSAL
IN AN INTERNATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION HOSTED BY
PENANG STATE GOVERNMENT THAT CHALLENGED THE
DESIGN COMMUNITY TO TRANSFORM THE REGION INTO A
SUSTAINABLE, GLOBAL DESTINATION.
BiodiverCity is conceived as an "urban mosaic" to include the three islands as
well as a set of urban design guidelines that address pedestrian and mobility
networks, building sustainably, and harvesting resources. The plan supports the
Penang2030 vision, offering a clear focus on livability, on stimulating a socially
and economically inclusive development, and on environmental sustainability
for future generations.
As with any great
city, the plans for
BiodiverCity include a
vibrant nightlife and
entertainment scene.
