Change Expected

"One finding that surprised me was that we saw more signs of industry resilience rather than signs of
personal resilience," says Chung, who notes that although the wellbeing ratings for individuals were
relatively high, there were still some burnout cases. "The pandemic has disrupted the professional,
but when you look at the impact on the firm or the industry, we see more signs of resilience there.
People have come together to focus on the project and to make sure the projects that were delivered
to clients were really taking into account the health, safety, and wellbeing of the client."
Whatever the new normal turns out to be, everyone is eager to make that transition; however, there
may be some roadblocks ahead. Business leaders who participated in the research ranked consumer/
client confidence, employee health, and the U.S. economy as the most important factors for a
business to return to pre-COVID performance. Major changes are expected in business operations
(marketing and branding) and the design process (FF&E selection and construction/installation).
The study shows that large design firms have had higher adoption to changes in practice; specifically
in product and material specifications/certifications for occupant health. Commercial design
professionals put more emphasis on material and product specifications/certifications for occupant
health than residential design professionals. And, as expected, virtual client meetings and remote
work (to some degree) will be part of design practice indefinitely.
Medium and large firms are more open to virtual product demos, and self-employed and large
firms see opportunity in virtual consultation. Residential design professionals see slightly higher
opportunity in virtual consultation than commercial design professionals. The northeast region has
higher adoption towards appointment-based visits, virtual consultation, and virtual product demos.
Respondents expect that trade shows, conferences, and networking will experience major changes
due to the pandemic.
