réfléchit aux avancées en
la matière en ce trentième
anniversaire de l'ADA
La plupart d'entre nous tiennent pour acquis des éléments tels que portes à
ouverture automatique, rampes d'accès aux entrées, couloirs spacieux et plans
d'étage ouverts. Mais il y a 30 ans, ces caractéristiques étaient tout sauf monnaie
courante, rendant même difficiles, pour un utilisateur en fauteuil roulant, une
personne atteinte de cécité, un aîné à mobilité réduite ou même une mère avec
une poussette, les sorties les plus habituelles.
La loi américaine intitulée Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) a été adoptée
le 26 juillet 1990, sous la présidence de George H. W. Bush. Son but était
de s'assurer que les personnes en situation de handicap avaient les mêmes
possibilités de participer aux activités quotidiennes de la vie : avoir un emploi,
aller dans les magasins ou utiliser les services et programmes gouvernementaux.
Pour la communauté du design, cela a entraîné un changement durable dans la
façon dont les designers et les architectes envisageaient un lieu bâti - faire en
sorte que l'on puisse aisément y entrer et en sortir, et circuler à l'intérieur sans
difficulté. Et bien que l'ADA devait s'appliquer seulement aux édifices publics
et commerciaux, de nombreux designers ont adopté pour des aménagements
résidentiels certains des éléments de design qui contribuaient à rendre un local
commercial conforme aux exigences de cette loi.
