I

moved back to the United States
from London not long ago,
and I still get a lot of magazines
from England. One of them recently
had an insert from the Royal Hospital
of Neuro-disability, an independent
medical charity that provides
rehabilitation and long-term care to
people with complex neurological
disabilities.
Thinking about the Royal Hospital
reminded me of how this issue's
theme-craft and culture-touches
on our work as designers no matter
what our practice specialty.
Besides treating patients in a
thoughtfully designed setting that
supports positive outcomes, the
Royal Hospital is also nurturing
the human condition of the
community at large. The recent
restoration of its Victorian Assembly
Hall's stained glass by the finest
local artisans will be enjoyed by
patients, residents and many others
who will come to admire it.

his past year was a difficult
one for our tight-knit
community of interior
designers and manufacturers across
the country. Whether it was a
financial loss, a health matter, or an
unexpected change, so many of us
had to learn how to change direction
quickly and pivot into a new world.
I want to take a pause, as we all
begin to wind down, to express my
sincere gratitude to our members,
who, like us at IDC, made the best
of a difficult and often unforgiving
year. We know that our Canadian
interior design community is stronger
together and this year has proven
how resilient we are, and how
fearlessly we take on challenges.
As a non-profit advocacy association
serving Canadian designers, IDC
prides itself in reinvesting membership
fees back into serving our members.
We recognize our members'
invaluable contribution to our
organization, especially this year,

There is something inherently
comforting about hand-crafted
items-whether sourced locally
from young creatives innovating
new product categories or artisans
on another continent using ancient
methods. Both enhance the human
experience. They help us, as designers,
to achieve positive outcomes for
our clients and the people using the
spaces we design for them.
When Franco Bianchi left his
hometown of Bologna, Italy, to
become CEO of Haworth in
Grand Rapids, Michigan, he brought
his financial background and also
an innate appreciation for design
that was baked in during his Italian
upbringing. He changed Haworth's
outlook. The art and craft of design
became a core business element.
I do think the best corporate
environments integrate both local
and global products, not only in
executive suites and boardrooms but
also cafeterias and the workplace.

and we want to encourage everyone
to continue to be part of the
conversation with IDC, as we
maintain our advocacy efforts for
the interior design profession in
Canada and abroad.
Despite the current circumstances
affecting our industry on a global
level, IDC will continue to provide
relevant programs, events, and
learning opportunities to members in
a virtual environment in the coming
year. It is now more important than
ever to stay connected.

Our design decisions open up the
world to the people using these spaces.
We provide a different point of view
that also enhances productivity
while building community.
Of course, the decorative aspect of
the built environment is still at the
core of what we do as interior
designers. But we're problem solvers,
too. We help people look at space
differently... whether it's residential
or contract doesn't make any
difference. Our clients expect it to
be functional as well as beautiful so
that every end user feels comfortable,
engaged, and welcome.

members, support our communities,
and gain a better understanding
of who we are and what we need as
an industry to thrive.

IDC will continue to dive into
difficult conversations about race,
justice, and equality in our industry,
and will allocate funds to conduct
research on issues that matter to our
members but may be missing from
IDC's library-such as indigenous
design and designers, training tools
for women in leadership, and
resources to address inequality and
underrepresented people in the
industry, to name a few.
