OVID-19 has changed how we work,
live, and play. Nearly a year after the first
lockdowns, we've accepted that nothing
will ever be quite the same again. But-as I was
reminded during a recent conversation with one of
our advocacy task forces-the A&D community
has an exciting opportunity to shape a new and
improved built environment.
People don't feel safe right now. How and when
will we all go back indoors confidently together?
Engineering solutions and portable air purification
systems are already being rolled out, and interior
designers are helping lead this effort-but we also
will need to deliver the message to the public so
it's believable and understandable. The nation's
collective mental health depends on it.
As Jonathan Salk observed in the preface of
A New Reality: Human Evolution for a Sustainable
Future, the book he co-authored with his father
Jonas Salk, " Words and images... [can] affect
people in a way similar to a vaccine, inoculating
them with hope; immunizing them against stasis,
rigidity, and despair; and allowing all human
beings to live fuller, more creative, and more
productive lives. "
The ASID Adaptive Living Task Force is doing
exceptional work on the many lessons learned
from COVID. They're studying challenges faced by
nursing homes and long-term care facilities during
the pandemic and the impact on adaptive and
multigenerational family living. The task force will
also study best design practices for quarantining
family members, a healthcare worker exposed to
disease or a person with immunodeficiencies.
The task force is comprised of members of
ASID, IIDA, and AIA, as well as non-affiliated
design professionals, along with engineers,
educators, doctors, lawyers, and individuals from
other related professions all bringing their best
ideas to the table for a common cause. The effort is
truly cross-functional including issues that before
COVID we would not have considered part of
our discussion. This new spirit of collaboration
is a byproduct of the pandemic and also a
silver lining.
Another challenge since COVID-19 is how to
balance cravings for community and socialization
with the need for isolation during quarantine.
There are signs that multigenerational living as
well as aging in place are here to stay. So we'll
need to design our homes to be more flexible and
adaptable. Every room can have more than one or
two functions and transition easily, especially since
some of us may never head back to the office five
days a week.
