Designer-Driven Paint
Rocky Rochon has been practicing
design for nearly 40 years, and his
experiences-and dissatisfactions-
in finding perfect paint for a project
eventually spurred him to open his
own paint company and showroom,
The Paint Laboratory, after his
favorite paint store closed its doors.
Among his frustrations were that
the paint he ordered would look
nothing like the chip in the paint
deck, which was printed with ink.
What's more, he likes to use lighter
and darker versions of the same
color, but he found that traditional
paint colors would just add white to
a color, which wouldn't adequately
create a different value of the same
hue. Finally, he felt like the options
on the market were not as complex
as what he was seeking for stunning
design projects.
He began developing his own paint
line in 2013 and opened The Paint
Laboratory showroom in Seattle
the following year, solving all of his
previous challenges: Paint decks
were painted with swatches of
the actual paint, paint colors could
be truly steppable in values, and
consideration is given to how
a paint color will behave under
different lighting situations. He
has also engineered cutting-edge
finishes, including Endura Flat, a
matte-textured acrylic paint that is
completely washable. There's also
a suede finish, metallic paint, and a
lacquer-the high-gloss finish known
for its strong fumes-that passes
VOC regulations with flying colors.
" You can pick any color in our
collection or do a custom color, and
get it in any one of our finishes, "
says Rochon. " We are always
innovating. We tell designers, 'Come
to us with your problems, and we'll
help you figure them out.' "
With plans to open a second
showroom in Los Angeles soon,
Rochon says his e-commerce
business is flourishing, even more
so in the past year. " In the time of
COVID, our business has boomed, "
he says. " We'll tell people to get a
fan deck, look for a color that comes
close to what you want, and get
a sampler for colors that you think
might work. If something works,
we'll confer with them about where
they're using it and what the best
type of paint is, and we'll send it out
within two to three days. "
