Dear IEEE Members,
Award Recipients, Colleagues, and Friends:
Welcome to the 2012 IEEE Honors Ceremony!
Sometimes, innovation begins when an effort to understand nature leads to fresh insight.
Sometimes, innovation results from the relentless pursuit of solutions to a broad problem. And
sometimes, innovation emerges from the realization that something already known can be applied in a new way. Regardless of its genesis, innovation relies heavily on perspective, or FIELD
OF VISION. This field of vision ranges from a narrow focus on understanding, to an expansive
embrace of potential solutions. It allows innovators to see a path from the "known" to the "new."
Those we honor tonight have this incredible FIELD OF VISION. These are innovators who have
changed the world, whose achievements are prominent in the history of science and technology, and whose work has enhanced our quality of life and added to our prosperity.
This evening's honorees have changed the fields of computing through new architectures, systems, and components; digital communications through new codes and network concepts;
power and energy through improvements to the grid and revolutionary batteries. They have
advanced the fields of imaging and acoustics. They have built large, new, high-tech businesses;
improved engineering education; and made IEEE a stronger organization. We are awed by what
they have done.
We also celebrate the nominators who brought our honorees' achievements to our attention,
as well as the generous organizations and individuals who sponsor the awards. Without their
participation and support, IEEE Awards would not be among the most prestigious in the hightech community.
May tonight's recipients continue to inspire us all, particularly the young technologists whose
future innovations will shape our lives in decades to come.
