LETTER FROM THE IEEE PRESIDENT AND AWARDS BOARD CHAIR

Dear IEEE Members, Honorees, Colleagues, and Friends:
Welcome to the 2013 IEEE Honors Ceremony!
It was over 100 years ago that the IEEE and its predecessor societies, the American Institute of Electrical
Engineers and the Institute of Radio Engineers, began a series of recognitions of leaders and outstanding
contributors in the relevant aspects of science, technology, and education, encompassing both theory and
practice. Over the ensuing century, the impact of IEEE's technical fields has been astonishing-remaking
society, reaching across the globe, and penetrating to the farthest corners of the world. But as this monumental
transition has continued its progression, it has also gathered momentum, and progress has been coming at
an ever-increasing rate. Thus tonight's theme, "Accelerating Advances," recognizes both that the rate of
progress continues to accelerate and that the individuals and contributions that we celebrate here tonight
have been an integral part of that accelerating advancement of technology and society.
Tonight, IEEE recognizes educators, engineers, scientists, innovators, visionaries, leaders, and practioners
whose work has been, in the words of the IEEE tagline, "Advancing Technology for Humanity." To
paraphrase Thomas Edison, we hail them for their inspiration and their perspiration.
It is a pleasure to thank the many people and organizations that make the IEEE Awards program possible.
First, the individuals and groups that believe in the importance of sponsoring the awards being presented
tonight; their contributions are greatly appreciated. In addition, we thank the many nominators, endorsers,
and volunteers who have taken time from their busy schedules to support the awards efforts. And attendees,
we thank you for paying tribute to tonight's honorees with your presence and good wishes.
Finally, we offer our thanks and congratulations to tonight's honorees for their ideas and inspiration, for
their continued success, and for being role models for the current and future generations.
