he decades-long contributor,
technical leader, and multiawards winner of IEEE CAS-
Prof. Leon O. Chua received 2020 Julius Springer Prize for Applied Physics.
Leon O. Chua, Professor Emeritus
in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at
UC Berkeley in US, has been awarded
the 2020 Julius Springer Prize for
Applied Physics for his splendid career and nonlinear pioneering contributions to nonlinear circuit theories. He will be presented with this
award, which comes with a prize of
US$5,000, at the Magnus-Haus in Berlin, Germany on 18 September 2020. The award ceremony will also include a public lecture held by Chua.
As a world-renowned American electrical engineer
and computer scientist, Chua contributed to cellular neural and nonlinear networks, nanoelectronics, nonlinear
circuits and systems, nonlinear dynamics, bifurcation
theory, and chaos theory for decades. In 1971 he postulated a passive component named the memristor as the
4th passive electronic device derived from fundamental
considerations. This device with as predicted electrical
characteristics could be experimentally found only in
2008 by a team at HP. In 2011 Leon Chua wrote an article
for Applied Physics A, Resistance switching memories are
memristors, which has been downloaded over 12,000
times and received over 700 citations.
Leon Chua is well recognized in the community
his papers are cited ca. 80,000 times and he currently
has an h-index of 125 according to Google Scholar per
04/08/2020. Throughout his career, Chua has been the
recipient of numerous awards and honorary doctorates. Most recently, Chua also received the highest recognition from the IEEE Electron Device Society-the
2019 IEEE EDS Celebrated Member Award. While this

award started only in 2010, the past
awardees include 3 Nobel laureates
(George Smith in 2010, Herb Kroemer in 2011, and Leo Esaki in 2012),
and luminaries like Gordon Moore
(of Moore's Law fame) in 2017 and
-Robert Dennard (of Dennard's scaling law) in 2015.
It is worth noting that the 2019
EDS Celebrated Member Prize, together with 2020 Julius Springer Prize
awarded to Prof. Chua, represent the
most prestigious recognition from
two different professional societies
(i.e., Electron devices and physics),
where both recognition were based
on the fundamental and multi-disciplinary applications
of the memristor and its future disruptive potentials
that span from circuit and system theories, to physics,
optics, biology, and above all, neuromorphic systems,
brain science and artificial intelligence.
Prof. Chua received multiple awards from IEEE Circuits and Systems Society including IEEE Gustav Robert
Kirchoff Award (2005), IEEE CAS Mac Van Valkenburg
Award (1995 and 1998), You are here Charles A. Desoer
Technical Achievement Award (1993), Vitold Belevitch Award (2007), Guillemin-Cauer Award (1989, 1985,
1972), etc.
Prof. Chua was also awarded 7 USA patents and 17
Honorary doctorates (Doctor Honoris Causa) from
major European universities and Japan. He received
numerous other awards such as the first IEEE Gustav
Robert Kirchhoff Award in 2005, the Guggenheim Fellowship for Natural Sciences. He is a foreign member of
the Academia Europaea, and the Hungarian Academy of
Sciences. Prof. Chua was elected Confrerie des Chevaliers
du Tastevin in 2000. When not immersed in Science, he
relaxes by searching for Wagner's leitmotifs, musing
over Kandinsky's chaos, and contemplating Wittgenstein's inner thoughts.
Many thanks to Wujie Wen, who contributed to
this report.
