An Interview with Professor Gabor C. Temes
I
n February of 2022, Nele Mentens and Fan Chen, Associate
Editors of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Magazine,
had the great honor to interview Professor Gabor C.
Temes, who is a member of the National Academy of Engineering
and the National Academy of Inventors. In this
interview, Professor Temes shares with our CAS readers
his notable career in industry and academia, his views on
future analog circuit research trends, and his unique and
rich life experience. The interview is sorted into seven
questions. We hope our CAS readers
enjoy reading it.
Biography
Gabor C. Temes (SM'66-F'73-LF'98)
received the Ph.D. degree in electrical
engineering from the University of
Ottawa, ON, Canada, in 1961, and an
honorary doctorate from the Technical
University of Budapest, Budapest,
Hungary, in 1991.
He held teaching and research
positions at the Technical University
of Budapest, Stanford University
and the University of California
at Los Angeles (UCLA). He worked
in industry at Northern Electric R&D Laboratories, Ottawa,
Canada, as well as at Ampex Corp. He is currently
a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of UCLA, and a Professor
at Oregon State University. He coedited and coauthored
many papers and books; the most recent one
is Understanding Delta-Sigma Data Converters, 2nd ed.
(IEEE Press/Wiley, 2005).
Dr. Temes received many teaching and research
awards, including the IEEE Leon K. Kirchmayer Graduate
Teaching Award in 1998 and the IEEE Gustav Robert
Kirchhoff Award in 2006. He was the recipient of
the 2017 Semiconductor Industry Association/SRC
University Researcher Award. He is a member of the
National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy
of Inventors.

Question 1: You had your undergraduate education
in Hungary, and your Ph.D.
from the University of
Ottawa, Canada. And you also held academic positions
at the Technical University of Budapest, Stanford University,
UCLA, and Oregon State University. You have
worked in industry as well. What motivated you to make
the transition from industry to academia? What guided
you to the research field of analog signal processing and
data converters?
Answer 1: I was happy in industry.
Most of the time, I had a small
expert group, which was allowed to
do research, interrupted only when
there was an urgent need to devel -
op product oriented analog circuits.
I was teaching courses at
Stanford and Santa Clara University
in my spare time as a lecturer,
but I was not looking for an academic
job. However, when UCLA
decided to start a circuit group in
its EE department, I was recommended
to them by Professor Ernest
Kuh of UC Berkeley as a good
prospective founding member. This
opportunity to build a new and strong research and
teaching group at one of the leading schools in the
US was irresistible.
At this point, the field of my research had broadened.
I had worked on analog circuit design for over 12 years
in industry, but when I went to UCLA, I started to do research
also in digital signal processing. Our school had no
activities in that area which offered exciting research and
teaching opportunities. Hence, for a few years I focused
on it. However, when the switched-capacitor technique
appeared, it revolutionized analog CMOS circuit design.
This opened up even greater potential in research involving
analog circuits, causing me to return to it once again.
Question 2: You mentioned that you and your wife left
your native Hungary under circumstances similar to the
tragic events currently unfolding in the Ukraine. Could
you elaborate on it?
