SERESSA2021-17th International School on
the Effects of Radiation on Embedded Systems for Space Applications
Abstract
The 17th International School on the Effects of Radiation on Embedded
Systems for Space Applications, SERESSA 2021, was organized
as a full virtual event from Porto Alegre, Brazil. This edition had 18
invited speakers and 11 posters. It had 186 participants from a large
set of countries, a new record of participation. This year SERESSA
has the technical support of CASS and CEDA.
I. Introduction

ERESSA, International School on the Effects of Radiation
on Embedded Systems for Space Applications,
combines academic, government, and industrial
communities working in the area of radiation effects on embedded
systems. Radiation effects are a significant concern
for space and avionics systems, but also for critical applications
operating at ground level such as automotive, high-energy
facilities, medical or even banking. The main reason for
this is the technology scaling using lower voltage supplies,
that are more sensitive to radiations reaching the ground
level. The school is based on lectures giving an overview
of state-of-art topics in the area, involving real case studies
and the common tools of the domain. The intended audience
includes both beginning and experienced researchers,
engineers, and graduate and undergraduate students wishing
to enhance their knowledge base in this rapidly evolving
field. Topics covered by SERESSA include: radiation environment,
spacecraft anomalies, single-event effects (SEE),
total dose effects (TID), radiation effects in systems, radiation
effects in solar cells, architecture hardening in analog,
and digital circuits and in memories, software hardening, effects
in FPGAs, hardness assurance, rate prediction, radiation
testing, laser testing and remote testing experiments.
First SERESSA was organized in 2005, from November 20
to 25, in the middle of the Amazon Jungle, Manaus, Brazil [1].
The proposal of SERESSA was an original idea of Prof. Ricardo
Reis (UFRGS, Brazil), the main organizer of the first edition.
He invited Dr. Raoul Velazco (TIMA/INPG, France) and Prof.
Pascal Fouillat (IMS, University of Bordeaux, France) to be the
Program Chairs, that set up an excellent program. The location
was the Ariau Hotel, a hotel in the level of top of trees.
The location was perfect to improve the networking between
participants as everybody was together during the event,
even during the nice and interesting set of social events.

After the success of the first edition, Dr. Raoul Velazco
becomes the main responsible to manage the selection
of locations to organize future editions of SERESSA. The
second edition of SERESSA was organized in Seville,
Spain, at the CNA, and hosted by prof. José Luis Huertas
(CNM, Spain).
Then, SERESSA keep moving around the world, being
organized in Buenos Aires (Argentina), Palm Beach (USA),
Takasaki (Japan), São José dos Campos (Brazil), Toulouse
(France), Ansan (South Korea), Moscow (Russia), Bariloche
(Argentina), Puebla (Mexico), Montreal (Canada), Munich
(Germany), Nordwick (The Netherlands), Seville (Spain)
and a virtual edition from Porto Alegre (Brazil) in 2020.

II. SERESSA 2021
In 2021, it was the celebration of 16 years of SERESSA, and it
was organized as a second full Virtual Edition, from Porto
Alegre, Brazil. Fig. 3 shows the main flyer of the event. This
edition had 18 invited speakers and 11 posters. The 186 participants
were from a large set of countries, a new record of
participation. This year SERESSA had the technical support
of CASS, CEDA, SBC and SBMicro. It was hosted by the Federal
University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) at Porto Alegre.
