hazards. In a futuristic scenario, if the SMS is deployed on
many monuments of a city and algorithms that are able to
extract more detailed information about the crowd (e.g., its
size and distance from the monitored structure) are provided, then crowd movements can be understood in real time.
As a result, the evacuation routes or the collection points
could be dynamically chosen by the municipalities that manage such events.

He has coauthored more than 70 papers published in international journals and conference proceedings. He is a member

Pietro Cassará (pietro.cassara@isti.cnr.it) earned his
M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees jointly with the State University of
New York in telecommunication and electronic engineering
from the Universitá degli Studi di Palermo, Italy, in 2005 and
2010, respectively. He is currently a researcher at Wireless
Network Laboratory, Information Science and Technologies
Institute-National Research Council at Pisa, Italy.
Fabio Mavilia (fabio.mavilia@isti.cnr.it) earned his M.Sc.
degree in electronic engineering from the University of Pisa,
Italy, in 2012. Since 2014, he has been a graduate fellow at
