IEEE SSCS Macau Chapter Hosts Two Invited Lectures
The IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society
(SSCS) Macau Chapter hosted two invited
lectures, one by Prof. Lin Cheng,
University of Science and Technology
of China, on 30 July at the University
of Macau, and the other, held
virtually, by Dr. Jing Zhu, Wuxi Chipown
Microelectronics, on 6 August
2021. The presentations aimed to
maintain constant academic communication
between senior industrial
engineers, scholars, and SSCS Macau
Chapter members.
Cheng's lecture was " High-Efficiency,
Single-Stage Wireless Power
Receiver and Wireless Charger. "
Today, wireless power transfer (WPT)
is becoming a widespread technique
in many applications, such as biomedical
implants, portable device

chargers, and electric vehicles, attracting
extensive attention. In his
speech, Cheng introduced the latest
state-of-the-art research into WPT.
He discussed a single-stage wireless
power receiver and a wireless charger
for portable applications, elaborating
on the concept and operating principle
of a three-level, reconfigurable,
resonant regulating rectifier-based
power receiver and charger. He also
explained a bootstrapping technique
using a voltage doubler with adaptive
phase control to integrate bootstrap
capacitors on-chip. A Q&A session
followed, and Cheng gave detailed
answers to questions raised by students
in the field and offered suggestions
for future research.
The second invited lecture took
place online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In his presentation, " The Gate
Driver IC Techniques (for Si Power
Device and Wide-Bandgap Power Device), "
Zhu described several kinds
of gate driver ICs for high- and lowvoltage,
isolated and nonisolated,
low- and high-side power switches
Prof. Cheng delivers his lecture on WPT
techniques.
