IEEE CAS-EDS-SSCS Wuhan Joint Chapter Holds Technical
Talk Series: The Spark of Thought Lighted in May

It was a feast of ideas in May for the
IEEE Circuits and Systems Society
(CAS), IEEE Electron Devices Society
(EDS), and IEEE Solid-State Circuits
Society (SSCS) Wuhan Joint Chapter,
which hosted two technical talks by
distinguished speakers in the field
of semiconductor and microelectronics
in China. Both events were held in
the New Optical and Electronic Building,
School of Optical and Electronic
Information, Huazhong University of
Science and Technology (HUST).
The first talk, on 10 May, was " Design
of Low-Power PLL and CDR ICs for
High-Speed Communication, " by Dr.
Zhang, an associate professor at the
Institute of Semiconductors, Chinese
Academy of Sciences. He introduced
several low-power design techniques
for ultralow-jitter phase-locked loops
(PLLs) and four-level pulse-amplitude
modulation (PAM4) clock and data
recovery circuits (CDRs), including
two PLLs and three PAM4 CDRs. The
second talk, " Micro/Nano Sensors
and Their Applications for Health
Care, " was on 30 May and given by Dr.
Huang, a professor at the Institute of
Microelectronics, Chinese Academy
of Sciences. Huang presented his research
team's latest microelectronics/
microfluidics integrated biosensor
and actuator platforms for the manipulation,
sorting, and detection of
rare bioparticles. The technical talks
were very successful, drawing more
than 100 HUST faculty members, researchers,
and students. The spark of
thought in May endured through all
the IEEE CAS-EDS-SSCS Wuhan Joint
Chapter's 2021 seminars.

Chapter and HUST Organize a
Technical Talk
The CAS, EDS, and SSCS Wuhan Joint
Chapter, along with the School of Optical
and Electronic Information, HUST, held a
technical talk by Prof. Chia-Hsiang Yang,
National Taiwan University, on 12 July
2021. Yang delivered " Energy-Efficient
Path Planning Processor for Autonomous
Navigation of Microrobots. " Due to
the COVID-19 pandemic, he was unable
to travel to Wuhan, and the event was
held online through Tencent Meeting.
Yang started his talk by introducing
what path planning is. Although
they assist humans in many applications,
autonomous robots require an
intelligent brain implemented through
energy-efficient IC design to navigate
dynamic environments. Autonomous
navigation for microrobots consists of
a perception process to analyze various
sensor data, a cognition process to
make decisions based on collected information,
and an action process to execute
motion commands. Path planning
belongs to the cognition process. Yang
