Low-Dropout Regulators for
Fine-Grained Spatiotemporal Power
Management of Digital Load Circuits. "
Raychowdhury received the Dimitris
N. Chorafas Award for outstanding
doctoral research, in 2007. The award
was established in March 1992 in collaboration
with the Swiss Academy of
Engineering Sciences, Swiss Academy
of Humanities and Social Sciences,
Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences,
and Swiss Academy of Natural Sciences.
The foundation is based in Lucerne,
Switzerland.
The presentation took participants
through history and concepts from
1996 to the present, introducing alldigital
low-dropout regulators (LDOs).
The presenter talked about loop architecture
and circuit design on adaptive
design, switched mode control, hybrid,
dual-loop topologies, and the implications
of analog loop design. For
the sake of time, the lecture skipped
some well-known chapters on continuous-time
LDOs with digital gates, with
material covering loop architecture
and circuits as well as linear control.
The presenter discussed some more
recent work on unified voltage and
frequency regulation, which emerges
in large systems on chip where costs
are among the optimization targets.
After an open discussion, the lecture
concluded with a group picture.
The work delivered in August referred
to the Distinguished Lecture
" Precision BAW Oscillators for LowPower,
High-Performance Applications. "
The presentation detailed the
history of timekeeping, intersecting
with the Swiss tradition of the
watchmaking [4], [5]. A discussion
of crystal oscillators and alternative
solutions was proposed, switching
gears to bulk acoustic wave resonators
and their associated architecture
and design choices.
Measured performances and system-level
advantages were presented.
Finally, there was a discussion of
appliances with traditional generalpurpose
microcontrollers, including
connectivity as well as system secu144

rity superiority due to the impossibility
of intentional clock glitching.
This led to a detailed Q&A session
on the packaging and process requirements
to achieve desired performance.
Some participants were
interested in possible cryogenic uses
of quantum bits and high-energy
physics experiments. Both sessions
lasted about 1 h, and participant
feedback was positive.
