One major difference between
these fractional-N PLLs is the PD topology,
which is used to detect the phase
difference between the reference clock
(CKREF) and feedback clock (CKFB). In
a classic analog PLL, the phase difference
is converted to a current by a PFD
CP to tune the VCO, while in a DPLL,
it is converted to a digital phase word
by a TDC and then controls a DCO.
In Figure 7(c), the DTC and the sampling
PD (SPD) perform the phase error
detection. A noticeable trend from
Figure 6 is that DTC-based SPLLs and
SSPLLs are pushing the state of the art,
demonstrating lower jitter and a better
FoM.
An SSPLL was proposed for integerN
PLLs in [44] [see Figure 8(a)]. Since
the VCO frequency, fVCO, is an integer
multiple of the CKREF frequency, fREF,
a sampler can be used as a PD, which
provides much higher gain (KPD) compared
to other PD topologies, such as
PFD CPs and TDCs. As a result, the
noise contribution from the following
stages (e.g., GM and the LF) are greatly
suppressed by the high PD gain. The
sampler circuit is simple as well as
low power and low noise. Moreover,
the frequency divider in the feedback
path and the noise associated with it
are eliminated. Thus, the overall PLL
jitter is dominated only by the CKREF
and VCO. However, subsampling PDs
(SSPDs) and SPDs suffer from very narrow
linear operation ranges (i.e., typically
fewer than 10 ps), which is not
sufficient for fractional-N synthesis.
