that time, as a 10-bit ADC, the ADC
enabled a conversion speed roughly
four-times faster than competing
products. This ADC was used for digital
optical transmission for HDTV
signals. It was awarded the R&D100
prize in 1994 as the ADC that ex -
panded the potential for application
of DSPs. Figure 3(b) also shows the
author of this article at the award
winner's booth in Chicago in 1994.
Incidentally, the unique layout
adopted to match the delay time
of the input signal with the delay
time of the sampling clock was
certified as a beautiful industrial
design and exhibited at the Metropolitan
Museum in New York. And
in 1991, a 6-bit, 1-GS/s ultrahighspeed
ADC [6] was developed and
installed in Yokogawa Electric's
digital oscilloscope.

However, for integration of the system,
CMOS ADCs that can realize mixedsignal
circuits had been in strong
demand. Therefore, we developed a
CMOS 10-bit, 20-MS/s, 30-mW ADC [7]
(see Figure 4) announced in 1993.
The issue of insufficient CMOS transistor
accuracy was addressed by using
chopper technology, which stores offset
voltage mismatch in the capacitor
and cancels it, but the accuracy
required for the video-rate 10-bit ADC
made it difficult. Then we invented the
interpolation circuit using the capacitor
