as instructors. Figure 16 shows our
mixed-signal circuit design team
at the time. This lecture was distributed
to external engineers as a
CD-ROM, and roughly 500 external
engineers learned CMOS analog circuit
design using this CD-ROM.
Education for circuit engineers
continued after I joined Tokyo Tech in
2003. From 2004 to 2012, I launched
a 14-day, systematic analog CMOS
circuit design course for industrial
engineers. Approximately 100 engineers
receive the seminar every year,
and a total of more than 1,000 engineers
have taken the course. Since
then, this course has been shortened
to five days, and continues to this
day, training engineers of semiconductor
companies in Japan. Nearly 70
engineers take the course every year,
totaling roughly 600 engineers who
have attended the course. In addition,
I have served as a lecturer of short
courses, tutorials, and forums at
many international conferences, such
as the IEEE International Solid-State
Circuits Conference, VLSI Circuits
Symposium, Asian Solid-State Circuits
Conference, and so on, and published
eight textbooks on analog electronic
circuits and electric circuits.
I started to establish our laboratory
from scratch. After 2009, the
laboratory became stable, the number
of students in the laboratory
risen to approximately 40, and the
number of doctoral students has
become roughly 15 each year. It has
become an international
laboratory
that accepts many international students.
Figure 17 is a photo of our
laboratory staffs and student in 2012.
In the 15 years up to my retirement
in 2018, I advised 88 masters and 30
doctoral degree graduates. I provided
students US$200,000 per year from
research expenses, which is not typical
at Japanese universities.
The education in the laboratory
emphasized not only research but
also growth as a human being in the
spirit of learning and playing well. I
made the book-reading sessions to
enhance education; laboratory trips,
including overseas (Taiwan, Korea,
etc.), to deepen mutual friendships;
and home parties several times a year
to promote exchange among students
and nurture intellectual thought.

sity education in Japan, so I accepted
the graduates of the university and
trained them as engineers of the company.
In the five years leading up my
retirement age of 65, I focused on educational
reform of the Department of
Electrical and Electronic Engineering
and in universities. I made the clarification
and systematization of basic
knowledge and generation of curriculum
charts, building a course database,
