IEEE Solid-State Circuits Magazine!

In this first issue of the 14th year of
IEEE Solid-State Circuits Magazine, we
are pleased to share semiconductortechnology
trends as identified by
the members of the 12 subcommittees
of the International Solid-State
Circuits Conference (ISSCC) 2022,
which include Analog Systems,
Data Converters, Digital Architectures
and Systems, Digital Circuits,
Imagers, MEMS, Medical, and Display,
Machine Learning, Memory, Power
Management, Radio-Frequency Circuits,
Technology Directions, Wirelss,
and Wireline.
The 2022 theme for ISSCC is Intelligent
Silicon for a Sustainable World.
We appreciate the efforts of Shahriar
Mirabbasi, Laura C. Fujino, and Kenneth
C. Smith, and the many subcommittee
chairs, press designates, and
technical editors in contributing to
this feature article.
At this year's ISSCC, the 2022 IEEE
Donald O. Pederson Award in SolidState
Circuits will be officially announced.
This year's award goes to
Prof. Akira Matsuzawa " for pioneering
contributions to low-power, analog-todigital
converters in systems on a chip
(SoCs) for digital video applications. "
Over his 40 years in the semiconductor
industry and academia, Prof.
Matsuzawa has contributed to developing
many low-power integrated
circuits for ADCs, mixed-signal SoCs,
and design technologies.

The availability high-definition
digital recording and playback functionality
is now ubiquitous. At its
core, this functionality is enabled
via digital video ICs and system
technologies. One of the key
components working behind
the scenes are the
analog-to-digital converters
(ADCs). Prof. Matsuzawa
has been involved
in developing some of
the early fully integrated
ADCs while at Matsushita
Electric Industrial (Panasonic).
These ADCs
enabled digital video
switchers, the HDTV
transceivers for consumer use in the
era of Internet-of-Things.
This year's award
goes to Prof. Akira
Matsuzawa
" for pioneering
contributions to
low-power, analogto-digital
converters
in systems on a
chip for digital
video applications. "
(MUSE) system that broadcasted the
Seoul Olympic game in 1988, and
home HDTV receivers as well as optical
transmission systems for HDTV
and portable digital video equipment.
In the 1990s, Prof. Matsuzawa work
followed the consumer demands for
up-and-coming DVD technologies.
Once again, he was involved in the
developing some of the advanced
fast, low-power, high-resolution ADCs
that could meet the challenges of this
new technology. This led to the developing
of mixed-signal SoCs for fully in -
tegrated DVD systems. Over 500 million
of the SoCs were shipped by Panasonic
with total sales of USD 2.5 billion
over nine years.
In 2003, Prof. Matsuzawa joined
Tokyo Institute of Technology as a
full professor where he is currently
developing low-power 60 GHz CMOS
Guest editor Hideto Hidaka has
invited Akira Matsuzawa himself as
well as Chorng-Kuang Wang and Asad
Abidi to provide articles
describing the
award winner's accomplishments.
In
addition, this issue
includes tutorial columns
on one-transistor-onecapacitor
memory cells
by Ali Sheikholeslami, the
design of equalizers (part
II) by Behzad Razavi, and
the testing of ADCs by Chris
Mangelsdorf. This issue also
features an article by Thanos Ramkaj
et al. on a framework to systematically
estimate and compare performance
metrics of ADC architectures.
The goal of the magazine continues
to be to provide society news and
information as well as a series of selfcontained
resources to keep the SSCS
member up to date with changes in
technology while, at the same time,
providing reviews of circuit design
concepts. This includes contributions
from experts describing the
current state of affairs and the evolution
of a particular IC technology.
We will also continue to feature articles
focused on the contributions
of luminaries, and solid-state circuit
techniques and directions. We hope
you enjoy reading the IEEE Solid-State
Circuits Magazine.
