with a high level of integration and
hermetic packaging. Compared with
existing methods, this work enabled
a large number of stimulation sites,
with a reduced thermal budget and
improved system efficiency.
Retinal prostheses aim to restore
v ision to pat ients af fected by
photoreceptor neurodegeneration
through electrical stimulation of
the remaining tissue layers. Clinically
available prosthetic implants
have not achieved useful vision restoration,
as power dissipation and
interconnect complexity limit the
maximum number of stimulation
pixels. The conventional approach
is to wirelessly transmit video (from
an external camera) to a periocular
implant, where an IC generates N distinct
stimulation pulses and feeds
them through transocular leads to
an N-channel microelectrode array
(MEA). The flexible, biocompatible,
and surgically tenable interconnect
for that kind of implementation is
limited to 256 channels. Aside from
the interconnect, expanding the
number of channels also increases
the power spent on data transmission,
recovery, pulse generation,
and charge balancing.
This work [4] proposed a scalable
system that avoids the power and
interconnect
limitations through
an optically addressed MEA that is
globally controlled by an inductively
powered wireless SoC. The MEA
