IEEE Power Electronics Magazine - March 2020 - 84

FIG 1 Jin He of TDK Lamdba (front, standing) gives his presentation.

November 2019 at the Radisson Hotel
in Hauppauge, New York. More than
52 exhibitors showcased products
including ac-dc power supplies, dc-dc
converters, power semiconductors,
passive components, magnetics, elec-
tromechanical devices, thermal man-
agement and test equipment, and com-
pliance services. Two technical lecture
tracks were held in separate cham-
bers. After a complimentary network-
ing lunch, the lectures began with the
keynote address, "Trends in Power
Electronics: 1970 to 2019," by Josh
Hauser, now retired, who was former-
ly director of TDI Power. He chroni-
cled the changes that occurred in the
merchant power-supply business dur-
ing the past 50 years, including an
overview of the evolving technology,
regulation, and market.
Since the symposium's launch in
2017, it has continued to grow and at-
tract power professionals, engineers,
designers, and component manufac-
turers from the tri-state area and be-
yond, including regional and world-
wide corporations. As a result, there
were more than 475 participants at
the 2019 event. According to the orga-
nizers, each exhibitor was engaged in
discussing its products and services.
The symposium is free and offers sub-
stantial value to the exhibitors and
power professionals.
Anthony Gallucci, Glenair Mission
Critical Solutions, said:
This year was the first time Gle-
nair participated in this Sym-

84

IEEE POWER ELECTRONICS MAGAZINE

posium. Although Glenair is
actively involved in many global
shows, this regional IEEE par-
ticipation was extremely advan-
tageous to us. Many local cus-
tomers visited our booth with
current and future applications
that needed solutions we are
able to provide. Additionally,
our team met new individuals
as customers that we did not
know before. I believe this show
was very beneficial to the cus-
tomer and supplier side. Thanks
again for the invite; we plan on
sponsoring this event again in
the future.
The symposium offered two tech-
nical presentation tracks, "Technical
Presentations" and "Industry Track
Presentations," for a total of 12. The
Industry Track Presentations were
added last year and continued to be
well received. They include detailed
information regarding specific techni-
cal solutions in a forum that includes
key decision makers.
Presentations included relevant
topics from TDK Lambda, Texas In-
struments, Analog Devices, ST, Key-
sight Technologies, Wurth Electron-
ics, Dehn, Payton America, Torotel,
Mitsubishi, Nichicon, and Cogni-
Power. They began with a presentation
by Jin He, TDK Lambda (Figure 1),
"Bridgeless Isolated PFC Using GaN
Switches and Digital Control." Dan
Schwarz, Keysight Technologies, de-
livered "Optimizing and Analyzing

z	March 2020

Closed Loop Performance for Power
Electronics." Isaac Cohen, Texas In-
struments, gave the speech, "Compar-
ing Transition Mode to Continuous
Conduction Mode," to a large crowd
of engineers. Jeffery Fedison, ST, had
a very interesting presentation, "How
SiC MOSFETs Enable Electric Ve-
hicles With Enhanced Performance,"
and Mark Hendricks, Dehn, kept the
audience interested with his discus-
sion, "Methods, Products, and Mate-
rials Available to Meet the Require-
ments of the Direct Lightning Strike."
The Industry Track Presentations
included "Power System Manage-
ment and Programming Tools" by
Tom Mosteller, Analog Group; "Planar
Magnetics Technology Advantages"
by Jim Marinos, Payton Magnetics;
"Power Quality Issues With High Pow-
er ac/dc Converters" by Dave Furnish,
Torotel; "High Power SiC Modules up
to 1,200 A, 3.3 KV" by Eric Motto, Mit-
subishi; and "New Hybrid Capacitor/
Battery" by Mark Cebbia, Nichicon.
Other presentations included "EMC,
Inductors, and Filtering" by Doug
Toth, Wurth, and "Vampire Power De--
mand Pulse Regulation" by Tom
Lawson, CogniPower.
The event drew praise from ex-
hibitors and attendees representing
all power electronics sectors, in-
cluding military, industrial, originalequipment manufacturers, medical,
space, consumer, and automotive. Hal
Charych, who works in program man-
agement and business development at
BC Systems, said:
BC Systems has been making
military power supplies for over
35 years. We do not advertise;
so, few people besides the
major military contractors
know that we exist. This sympo-
sium gives us a chance to show
our name, get together with
local suppliers that we buy
from, and to meet local military
contractors based on Long
Island who we are not doing
business with. This is the only
trade show that we do, and the
benefits always surprise us.
