Finally, in my December 2020 column, I discussed a range of activities
related to diversity and inclusion at
both the IEEE level and within the
RAS. Since then, the RAS has officially
launched a Committee on Diversity
and Inclusion, chaired by Allison Okamura (Stanford University) and Chad
Jenkins (University of Michigan). This
committee will build on work that has
been done within our Member Activities Board and serve as a connection
point to IEEE-level activities. The RAS
has made significant progress with
respect to diversity and inclusion, particularly with respect to women in
robotics. In the last year alone, women
have been appointed as editors-in-chief
for both our Conference Editorial

Board and IEEE Robotics and Automation Magazine. During our most recent
AdCom election, three of the six newly
elected members are women. While
specific appointments are made by
individuals, all RAS members are eligible to vote in AdCom elections; that
our membership as a whole chose to
select women for half of the open
AdCom positions is a very good sign
for the future.
There is still, of course, much work
to be done. Our most significant progress to date has been limited to gender
diversity and, even then, only to certain geographical regions. My hope is
that this progress will extend beyond
geographical boundaries and that we
will begin to see increasing racial
