and validation processes of smart-grid
systems and related applications.
This includes the specification of
use cases and applications and their
model-driven design and validation as
well as the standard-based implemen-
tation and deployment.
Strasser has been a scientific co-
ordinator and work-package leader
on several national and European re-
search projects. Currently, he is lead-
ing a European effort, the European
Research Infrastructure Supporting
Smart Grid Systems Technology De-
velopment, Validation and Roll Out,
which connects 20 leading European
smart-grid research infrastructures
developing methods and concepts for
the validation and rollout of smart-
g r id system s a nd corresponding
technologies and solutions. He was
also responsible for the proof-of-con-
cept evaluation of the web-of-concept
approach in the European smart-grid

initiative European Liaison on Elec-
tr icit y Com m it ted Towards Long-
Term Research Activity Integrated Re-
search Program. In addition, Strasser
is an evaluator of research proposals
and projects for several national and
European funding agencies, includ-
ing the European Commission, Elec-
tronic Components and Systems for
Europea n Leadership, and Eure-
ka Eurostars.
Another of Strasser's activities is
related to standards. He is involved in
several international working groups,
such as IEC SC65B/WG15, which is
responsible for distributed automa-
tion using IEC 61499 function blocks;
IEEE P2660.1, addressing recom-
mended practices for interfacing
industrial agents and industrial au-
tomation devices; and IEEE P2004,
covering hardware-in-the-loop ap-
proaches for validating power and en-
ergy systems. Strasser is a founding

member of the Framework for Dis-
tributed Industrial Automation and
Control open-source initiative based
on the IEC 61499 standard providing
standard-compliant solutions for dis-
tributed and reconfigurable automa-
tion approaches using IEC 61499.
He has authored more than 170 sci-
entific publications (journal articles,
book editorials and chapters, confer-
ence papers, editorship of conference
proceedings, and technical reports) as
well as two related patents. He is a senior
member of the SMCS, the IEEE Indus-
trial Electronics Society (IES), and the
IEEE Power & Energy Society, where he
is involved in several committees, task
forces, and working groups. Strasser is a
member of the IES Administrative Com-
mittee (2018-2020) and serves as an AE
for IEEE Transactions on Industrial
Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics, and Springer
and Hindawi publications.

onsidering the increasing
demand for combining social
and economic security (SES),
the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cyber-
netics (SMC) Technical Committee
(TC) on SES (SES-TC) will focus on
both the fundamental theory and
practical applications of SES and
advocate their development. The
scope of the research covers a broad
technical field related to the latest
technologies, new research re -
sults, and developments in the area
of SES on all levels. It provides a
platform for like-minded researchers
to present their findings and latest
developments in SES, along with
relevant advances in social, eco-
