Prague in 2005. Later, when Prof. Shi was working in the
United Kingdom, we partnered on two projects together from
the London Royal Society and the United Kingdom Engineer-
ing and Physical Sciences Research Council.
Working together helped me become acquainted with
Prof. Shi's main results: control and filtering for Markovian
jump systems with parametric uncertainty, bounded real
lemma for Markovian jump and switched systems, sliding
mode control for stochastic jump systems, and many oth-
ers, which happened to be close to my own interests. Not
surprisingly, finding common research topics came easily,
and we wrote more than a dozen papers together, some of
which have been quite successful. Prof. Shi deserves to be
considered a founder of the contemporary approach to
control and filtering of Markovian jump systems.
He continues to demonstrate excellence in his research;
his works have been cited more than 30,000 times. He
actively serves the community, supervising students, paving
a way to the future for a family of outstanding young scien-
tists, and being an editor of various prestigious journals. We
are close friends, and it gives me enormous pleasure to
write about him. An excellent person with great academic
career and a lovely family, living a successful life-that
would be an appropriate description for my colleague and
friend Dr. Shi.

I was very fortunate to be a postdoctoral fellow under Prof.
Shi's supervision at the School of Electrical and Electronic
Engineering at the University of Adelaide, Australia. Under
his patient and friendly guidance, I was mainly engaged in
the study of stability analysis and control problems of sto-
chastic systems. During this period, I experienced his pro-
found academic achievement in control theory. He has a
strong passion for his scientific research, chose hot research
topics for me, and explained the difficulties of research
direction. Prof. Shi provided many valuable academic
papers, explained how to read them, and relayed how to
extract the scientific questions from them. Under his patient
guidance, two academic papers have been published in IEEE
transactions about the stochastic stability and adaptive con-
trol of neutral stochastic time-delay systems with Markov
switching. Prof. Shi devoted a lot of energy and time to devel-
oping these two papers. He has also helped me overcome dif-
ficulty with the simultaneous existence of the neutral item,
the stochastic perturbation, and the time-varying delay by
explaining the value of these two problems about neutral
stochastic time delay systems with Markovian switching.
Prof. Shi is a well-recognized international theoretical
expert and scholar. I have benefited tremendously under
his guidance.

I started my collaboration with Prof. Shi in October 2015
when I began my postdoctoral research fellowship under

his supervision at Victoria University in Australia. Now, I
am a professor at Harbin Engineering University in China.
We collaborate on the control of singular systems. In most
noteworthy results about the control of singular systems,
there are equality constraint and nonstrict linear matrix
inequalities that may cause difficulties in verifying the
condition numerically. Our contribution provides two
equivalent sets that can replace the equality constraint
and nonstrict linear matrix inequality with strictly linear
matrix inequality equivalently. The method has been
applied to deal with dissipative control, admissibility,
H-infinity control, and sliding mode control of different
singular systems.

I have known Prof. Shi from his rich publication record,
and we personally met at a number of conferences, includ-
ing the International Federation of Automatic Control
World Congress, Milano, Italy, 2011. Prof. Shi has an
impressive academic record and a very strong scientific
research ability. He is among the most-cited researchers in
the world in Automatic Control and belongs to the world-
leading group of researchers who have successfully
applied engineering insights and mathematical skill to gen-
erate new findings that are both practically and theoreti-
cally significant.
So many of his research interests are very close to
mine, and we started a fruitful collaboration in 2013. We
published a number of joint papers and special issues in
different international journals. These works concern dif-
ferent domains, such as 1) novel control and estimation
techniques for fuzzy systems, singular systems, and the
finite frequency domain approach; 2) the fault-tolerant
control and fault filter designs; and 3) applications (e.g.,
automotive systems, energy, etc.).
In addition to his internationally recognized expertise
in these fields, Prof. Shi is a true gentleman, with whom it
is a pleasure to work.

From November 2013 to November 2014, I was a visiting
Ph.D. degree student at the University of Adelaide support-
ed by the China Scholarship Council. Any Ph.D. degree stu-
dent needs to provide a host university and supervisor
when applying for a scholarship, thus my collaboration
with Prof. Shi started in 2012.
The topic of our collaboration is mainly related to my
Ph.D. degree thesis. A key issue is how to allocate scarce
relief supplies in response to disasters. At the response
stage, it is difficult or impossible to collect enough sup-
plies under short preparation and pressing response time.
Emergency decision makers often consider multiple fac-
tors for allocating relief supplies, and the information
