This is in line with the introduction to this special issue,
emphasizing the trend toward decentralization in the provisioning of services, either within the energy infrastructure system itself, or in competition with established
infrastructure (such as road infrastructure). Examples
include a prosumer with solar panels on a roof or one with
an electric car used to provide public transport services.
Other researchers look into the possibilities of complementary currencies, as a policy instrument, to engage
customers in energy-saving behavior [19]. Just like frequent-flyer programs from airlines, these are based on
credits that are awarded when a consumer makes an
energy-efficient choice, and that can be spent on more
energy-efficient appliances or services [20].
The final paradox is that some people are not interested
in the environmental effects of their own energy-consumption pattern, and that apathy (or even opposition) drives
many people away from digitization and increased automation. Studies have shown that even tech-savvy consumers
lose their attention and interest in their consumption patterns after some weeks or months. Engineers need to
reach out to the social sciences to get consumers involved;
seeing technical infrastructures as socioeconomic ones is
a conditio sine qua non for meeting the European vison of
a carbonless society by around 2050.

About the Authors
Geert Deconinck (geert.deconinck@kuleuven.be) earned
his M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering and his Ph.D.
degree in engineering science from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium, in 1991 and 1996, respectively. He is a full
professor at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and in the
EnergyVille research center. His research focuses on robust
distributed coordination and control, specifically in the context of smart electric-distribution networks. He is a fellow of
the Institute of Engineering and Technology and cochair of
the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society Technical
Committee on Infrastructure Systems and Services. He is a
Senior Member of the IEEE.
Klaas Thoelen (klaas.thoelen@kuleuven.be) earned his
Ph.D. degree in engineering and computer science from the
Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium, in 2016. His doctoral research focused on application middleware and software engineering for multipurpose wireless sensor networks. Currently, he is a postdoctoral researcher at the
EnergyVille research center and at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. His research interests include data aggregation
and distributed software systems within the context of monitoring and controlling energy systems.
