IEEE Systems, Man and Cybernetics Magazine - January 2020 - 56

Mo, thank you for everything, we will
sorely miss you.
-Mariagrazia Dotoli
Editor-in-Chief
IEEE SMCS eNewsletter

Whether it was with humans or robots, Mo was always full of life.

inquisitive questions and also deeper
discussion where he could bring science, history, and philosophy together. There was a joke between the two
of us as I used to call him a walking
encyclopedia. Our discussion often
used to finish by saying that now that
we have solved the world's problems,
we'd better go back to the meeting
session in which we were participating. I often used his technique of provoking thought with my own team
and in my own workplace. He was a
great teacher and mentor.

I had the chance to know Mo only
for a few years, however, in these
years, I knew him as a warm-hearted
and helpful mentor. We were working together on different projects for
the elevation of our SMCS. Mo was
a funny and interesting person who
was full of life. Also, he was a wellestablished scholar with enormous
experiences in various research
a nd industrial areas. He will be
sorely missed.

What always most impressed me
was Mo's enthusiasm and energy as
founding editor of IEEE Systems,
Man, and Cybernetics Magazine. This
was his baby. He bombarded everyone with requests for submissions;
56

he actively pushed for more pages
and more printed copies. Financially, it was a constant struggle
to get more resources for the magazine out of the Society's limited
budget-but most of the time, he
managed to convince us that investing in the magazine is investing in
the future of the Society. And how
aesthetica lly plea sing-not just
technically interesting-were the
magazine issues! This prospering
magazine is a living tribute to Mo. It
is difficult to apply the usual phrase
"rest in peace"; to Mo, it is more
appropriate to say "Rest in Energy
and Enthusiasm."

I met Mo in February 2016 in San
Diego during my first Executive
Committee meeting of the SMCS,
where I was formally appointed as
EIC of the eNewsletter, taking a role
that had been his until then, since
he had recently been nominated
as EIC of IEEE Systems, Man, and
Cybernetics Magazine. During the
years, we have met many more times
and exchanged numerous emails
and messages where I was seeking
guidance, and he generously helped
me fulfill my new role as EIC. I will
always remember his enthusiasm
and wit, in particular when, that first
day in San Diego, he gave me admittedly his best tip: Do not let anybody
stop you! Go proudly your way as
an EIC! I have always since followed
his wise advice, not only as an EIC.

I really enjoyed working with Mo
and appreciated his dedication to the
SMCS. He was always there to support
the SMC technical committees through
IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics
Magazine. He was truly an admirable
person and role model for all.
-Rodney Roberts

Mo was a wonderful human being
who always put the welfare of others first and was kind and thoughtful to everyone whom he met. He
had the unique ability to make
everyone around him feel cheery
and respected. Over the many years
that I knew Mo, I always considered
him to be a good friend and a fine
colleague. The IEEE SMCS has lost
a champion scholar and one of its
strongest supporters. Mo's wit and
his humor were legendary! Indeed,
the global academic community has
lost an intellectual giant who had a
heart filled with kindness and joy.

These testimonials are but a small
sample of the many fond memories
that those who knew Prof. Mohamed
"Mo" El-Aref El-Hawary could share.
Remarks from all of his colleagues
within and beyond the IEEE SMCS
are not explicitly captured herein, but
this small sampling is surely representative. We will honor the memory
and legacy of our esteemed colleague
and sorely miss him, but he has left
us with a wealth of good experiences
to share with one another that are
guaranteed to bring smiles to our
faces over and over again.
