IEEE Systems, Man and Cybernetics Magazine - April 2023 - 5
of both students and professional volunteers.
I thank Karen Panetta, vice
president (VP) of Membership and
Student Activities 2022, for her passion,
dedication, and contribution to
making all these happen.
I am also happy to see that Saeid
Nahavandi, VP of Human-Machine
Systems (HMS), has actively promoted
its related technologies to our members.
The Technical Committee (TC)
on HMS and its members contributed
to several activities supporting the Society's
goals. Twelve special session
proposals on HMS topics for SMC 2022
were accepted, with a total number of
papers above 50 and more than 150 papers
as regular papers. The 12th BrainMachine
Interface (BMI) Workshop
took place during SMC 2022 in Prague,
and the HMS TC was one of the sponsors
for the BMI award ceremony
function. The BCI & Neurotechnology
Spring School 2022 events commenced
on 25 April 2022 and concluded on 4
May 2022 with 5,309 attendees from
107 countries. Various HMS TCs promoted
SMC Society activities through
their engagement at various technically
sponsored IEEE conferences
and publications of papers as well as
proactive engagement and contributions
in the IEEE Press Book Series on
Human-Machine Systems.
Thomas Strasser, VP of the System
Science and Engineering (SSE)
Committee, has accomplished several
activities, including strengthening
and establishing the evaluation of the
TC's performance and the provision
and update of TC templates. He also
prepared the update of the Society's
technical manual. The committee organized
many activities and support,
including IEEE SMC 2022 and IEEE
ARM 2022, and delivered keynotes
at IEEE CBDCom 2022, AIITA 2022,
ICRCA 2022, etc. Also, they were involved
in the organization of the
Eighth International Summer School
on Industrial Agents 2022 (ISSIA).
The committee members are involved
in the IEEE SA standardization WGs
P2814, P2852, P7010.1, P2668, etc.
Enrique Herrera-Viedma, VP of
Cybernetics, also actively engaged the
TCs on cybernetics
in a constructive
manner by creating
new cybernet ics
TCs; updating TC
pages on the SMC
Society website; and
reporting their activities.
He is also
actively organizing
CybConf 2023 and
identifying potential
and emerging topics
for new TCs.
Two new transactions
have been
approved for the
joint publications:
IEEE Open Journal
on Systems Engineering
and IEEE
Transactions on
Industrial CyberPhysical
Systems.
For our publications,
we have appointed
Tiago H. Falk as the editor-inchief
for the SMC Society E-Newsletter;
Tingwen Huang for IEEE Systems,
Man, & Cybernetics Magazine; and
Robert Kozma editor-in-chief for IEEE
Transactions on SMC: Systems. Two
new transactions have been approved
for the joint publications: IEEE Open
Journal on Systems Engineering and
IEEE Transactions on Industrial Cyber-Physical
Systems. The publication
committee approved two new ones: IEEE
Transactions on Immersive Displays
(technically cosponsored) and IEEE
Transactions on Privacy (technically
cosponsored). Thanks for the effort of
Shun-Feng Su, VP of Publications.
I appreciate Yo-Ping Huang for his
essential contributions to conferences
and meetings. With his hard work
and that of our committee members
and conference organizers, many conference
applications are reviewed, approved,
and conducted successfully
every year.
Thanks to Tadahiko Murata for his
excellent contributions to the SMC
Society. Tadahiko has served as the
VP of Organization and Planning. He
developed and regularly evaluated
our operational and strategic plans
and consolidated the constitution and
bylaws in cooperation with the IEEE
headquarters and others.
Finally, I thank all outgoing ExCom
and BoG members for their valuable
contributions. Our achievements
would not have been conceivable
without them, and I am happy to say
that many of them will continue to
take up more critical
positions within
the Society.
I congratulate
our new ExCom members,
President-Elect
Adrian Stoica; VP of
Systems Science and
Engineering Haibin
Zhu, VP of Membership
and Student Activities,
Mariagrazia
Dotoli, and reelected
VP of Finance Gina
Tang. I welcome Imre
Rudas and Eddie
Tunstel to continue their roles as junior
and past presidents of the Society,
respectively. Their advice is valuable
to the Society for its success and
smooth operations.
Congratulations to our newly elected
members: Tom Gedeon, Janusz
Kacprzyk, Zhijun Li, Márta Takács,
and Chenguang Yang. I look forward
to working with all of you.
We may continue to face the challenges
of the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, I am humbled by your dedication
to our Society despite these
difficult circumstances. You have
brought diverse experiences and formidable
capabilities to our Society
and, more important, your passion
and commitment to the SMC Society.
With all your support, I am confident
we can move from strength to
strength in the year ahead.
