Systems, Man & Cybernetics - January 2015 - 20

I was elected the chair of the IEEE
Society Presidents Forum. Later,
among many other volunteer positions, I was also elected a member of the IEEE Board of Directors
(2001-2004), the vice president of
the IEEE Publication Services and
Products Board (2001-2002), and the
vice president of the IEEE Educational Activities Board. In sum, I was
and remain humbled and honored to
have been the 12th SMCS president;
it certainly underscored my career
of service to the IEEE and the SMCS.
About the Author
James M. Tien became a distinguished professor and the dean of the
College of Engineering at the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida,
in 2007. He received his B.E.E. degree

from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
(RPI) and his S.M., E.E., and Ph.D.
degrees from the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology. He has held
leadership positions at Bell Telephone
Laboratories, the Rand Corporation,
and Structured Decisions Corporation (which he cofounded). He joined
the Department of Electrical, Computer, and Systems Engineering at
RPI in 1977 and twice served as the
acting dean of Engineering. He has
published extensively, been invited
to present dozens of plenary lectures,
and been honored with both teaching and research awards, including
being elected a Fellow of the IEEE,
INFORMS, and AAAS and being a
recipient of the IEEE Joseph G. Wohl
Outstanding Career Award, the IEEE
Major Educational Innovation Award,

the IEEE Norbert Wiener Award,
the IEEE Richard M. Emberson
Award, and the IBM Faculty Award.
He received a doctor of engineering
(honoris causa) degree from the University of Waterloo, Canada, and is
also an honorary professor at over a
dozen non-U.S. universities. He is an
elected member of the U.S. National
Academy of Engineering.
