Cybernetics Society (SMCS)

at its flagship conference, the 2014
IEEE International Conference on
Systems, Man, and Cybernetics (SMC
2014). The conference was held in San

systems (ITS) within North America
and China, leading research through
design and prototyping, product development, and commercialization at
multinational corporations, national

research institutes, research and development labs, universities, and entrepreneurial start-ups. His technical
contributions include concept formation, algorithm development, systems
architecture, and systems integration.
After receiving his postgraduate degrees from Zhejiang University (Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China)
and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Troy, New York) in mechanics,
computer, and systems engineering,
Dr. Wang worked as an instructor at
Zhejiang University and a research
assistant and associate at the NASA/
RPI Center for Intelligent Robotic
Systems for Space Exploration and
the New York Center for Manufacturing Productivity and Technology Transfer from 1984 to 1990. In
1990, Dr. Wang joined the University
of Arizona and became a professor
and the director of the Robotics
and Automation Lab and Program
in Advanced Research for Complex
Systems, where he founded and cofounded several labs, including the
Computer Integrated Manufacturing
Lab, Manufacturing and Flexible Automation Lab, Dynamics and Control
Lab, Real-Time Embedded Systems
Lab, Advanced Mining Robotic Systems Lab, and Advanced Traffic and
Logistics Algorithms and Systems. In
1999, he founded the Intelligent Control and Systems Engineering Center
at the Chinese Academy of Sciences
(CAS), Beijing, China, with the support of the Outstanding Overseas

Chinese Talents Program and Hundred Talents Program, and in 2002, he
was appointed as the director of the
CAS Key Lab for Complex Systems
and Intelligence Science. From 2006
to 2010, he was the vice president for
research, education, and academic
exchanges at the Institute of Automation, CAS.
Since 2005, he has been the dean
of the School of Software Engineering, Xian Jiaotong University. In 2011,
he become a state specially appointed expert and was appointed as the
director of the State Key Laboratory
of Management and Control for Complex Systems as well as the director
of the Research Center for Computational Experiments and Parallel
Systems Technology at the National
University of Defense Technology.
In 2013, he founded the Qingdao
Academy of Intelligent Industries for
research and development of social
computing, parallel systems, and
knowledge automation, under the
support of CAS and Qingdao Metropolitan Government.
Dr. Wang was principal investigator and project manager for over
US$1 billion research projects in intelligent systems and applications.
He has published over 20 books and
300 journal papers in applied mathematics, mechanics, robotics, control,
cybernetics, security, intelligence,
e-commerce, artificial intelligence,
knowledge automation, complex systems, and ITS. During the 1990s, he pioneered research in the coordination
of intelligent machines, approximate
dynamic programming for stochastic
nonlinear dynamic systems, linguistic
dynamic systems for computational
intelligence, application-specific operating systems for real-time embedded systems, and agent-based control
for networked systems. Since 2000,
he initiated and led research effort in
