T

he 2014 IEEE International
Conference on Systems, Man,
and Cybernetics (SMC 2014)
was held 5-8 October in San Diego,
California, at the luxurious Paradise
Point Resort and Spa, San Diego,
located on a 44-acre private island in
Mission Bay. More than 842 registered
attendees from 45 countries participated in the technical program and
social events. Conference attendees
resided in bungalow-style rooms amid
lush tropical gardens, tranquil lagoons,
wildlife, and 1.5 mi of sandy beaches.
SMC is the flagship conference of
the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society (SMCS). The 60 members of the Organizing Committee
came from all regions of the IEEE.
The Program Committee, with 832
international reviewers, provided
multiple reviews for each submitted
paper. To promote participation from
industrial companies and, for the first
time in the history of the annual SMC
conference, two new categories of
technical papers were established:

short papers, consisting of four pages
describing research development in
progress, and two-page demo papers
demonstrating technological advancements. Technical poster presentations were viewed daily during the
coffee breaks.
Technical Program
SMC 2014 was dedicated to Norbert
Wiener, the "father of cybernetics."
In honor of the 120th anniversary of
his birth, the Norbert Wiener Panel
Session featured seven past recipients of the Norbert Wiener Award-
the primary research award of the
IEEE SMCS. Future trends for SMC
technologies and applications were
presented by Bill Rouse, Keith Hipel,
Lotfi Zadeh, Dimitar Filev, José Millán, Larry Hall, and Bill Gruver. Pre-

pared remarks by the panel session
members were followed by an open
discussion with the audience.
Each day's keynote sessions featured executives from major U.S.
companies-Don Butler from Ford
Motor Company, John Apostolopoulos from Cisco Systems Inc., and Matt
Grob from Qualcomm Inc.-who presented the talks "Connected Cars:
Vehicles of the Future," "Networked
Applications with the Internet of
Things," and "Smartphone-Powered
Future," respectively.
Eight tutorials and workshops
provided many opportunities for
attendees to explore cutting-edge
topics, acquire new k nowledge
and skills, and learn from leaders
in the field. The workshop topics
included human-centered intelligent
