President's Message

I
am ver y pleased to have the
honor to serve as the 2016-2017
president of our organization,
the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society (SMCS). Our Society bears the great heritage of two
of the oldest IEEE professional
organizations-the Man-Machine
Systems group and the Systems Science and Cybernetics group, which
merged in the early 1970s and gave
birth to the current SMCS.
Over 45 years,
the Society has
evolved into a multidisciplinary professional organization promoting the
synergy of general
systems methodology, systems engineering technology,
man-machine engineering and meth- Dimitar Filev
ods, interaction of
control a nd communication among humans and machines, and dealing with the challenging system, human-centric, and
cyber application domains dominating the 21st century. There are three
specialized transactions covering
the main fields of interest (IEEE
Transactions on Systems, Man,
and Cybernetics: Systems; IEEE
Transactions on Human- Machine
Systems; and IEEE Transactions
on Cybernetics), a new IEEE Tran-

cial Systems (cosponsored with
the IEEE Computer Society), a new
IEEE Systems, Man, and Cyber-
netics Magazine, and an electronic
e-newsletter avai lable to all members. With over 40 technical committees and over 45 sponsored conferences every year, we have become
a premier IEEE Society and a focal
point for engineers, young professionals, and students working in
t he multidisciplinary field of s y s tems, human factors,
and cybernetics.
I a ssu me the
president's role at a
time when the Society is in a very good
position. Therefore,
my plan as new president is to continue to
support and enrich
our current strategic objectives and
activities. However, we cannot stagnate because science and technology, the engineering community, and
the IEEE are all on the move. As the
IEEE is strategically addressing the
need to change into a nimble, flexible,
and forward-looking organization, the
SMCS is facing the challenges to further evolve, adapt, and transform to
serve our membership even better in
the future.
As president, I plan to lead the
Executive Committee (ExCom) by
leveraging the strengths and assets
of our Society-dedicated volunteers,

established brand image, rich history,
premier publications and conferences,
and active technical committees and
local Chapters-toward the following:
◆ inspiring interest among SMCS
members and attracting new
members through participation
in the newly established SMCS
O ut rea ch F u nd i ng proce s s;
increasing the number of summer schools, forums for young
scientists, webinars, and tutorials; strengthening the reputation and effectiveness of Society
leadership; and revitalizing the
Dist i ng u ished L ect u rer a nd
Ambassador programs
◆ accelerating SMCS globalization
by improving our presence and
activities in emerging geographic regions while sustaining our
existing work and promoting balanced and diverse representation
in Society and technical committee leadership
◆ further improving the quality of
SMCS publications, refining pagebudget planning, and reducing
the backlog for all publications
◆ enhancing the quality of our
conferences by streamlining
SMCS -sponsored events and
establishing three regular triennial conferences (one each in systems, humans, and cybernetics)
to complement the annual SMCS
flagship conference
◆ promoting the SMCS leadership
role in the human-systems area
and establishing a better integration of SMCS activities with the
social, behavioral, life sciences,
and other soft sciences
◆ endorsing emerging interdisciplinary research and technology
fields through nurturing new conferences and technical committees and refining the scope of
our publications
