totally destroyed during the Mongol
invasion in the 13th century. In the
15th century, Buda became the new
royal residence and the center of the
Hungarian renaissance. During the
Ottoman age, Buda was the administrative center of the Turkish thralldom. The city quickly improved after
the 1700s.
Budapest, the capital of Hungary,
was established in 1873 by the union
of the hilly Buda, the historical
Óbuda on the left side, and the flat
Pest on the right side of the Danube
River. In the 19th century, Budapest
became an international metropolis
as the eastern capital of the AustroHungarian Empire. The city was critically damaged during the World
Wars; however, luckily, its historical
memory is nearly unchanged. Budapest became one of the most popular
tourist destinations in Europe after
the 1990s. Today, more than 4 million
tourists visit the city each year, making it the 25th most popular city of
the world and the sixth in Europe.
Budapest's Andrassy Avenue, the
Royal Palace of Buda, and the Danube River embankments are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Budapest abounds in monuments
from ever y a rchitectura l st yle.
Buda's Castle District, which is one
of the most frequently visited by
tourists, includes the Fisherman's
Bastion with its fantastic view of the
city, the Romanesque-gothic Matthias Church, the medieval Holy Trinity Column, the National Széchenyi
Library, St. George's Square, and the
Sándor Palace, which is the residence of the President of the Republic of Hungary. The Chain Bridge, the
symbol of the city; the Parliament
Building and the Kossuth Square; the
Heroes' Square; the Margaret Island
in the center of the Danube River; the
Gellért Hill and the Statue of Freedom; and the Budapest Zoo and
Botanical Gardens are some of the
