from the SoS environments, elaborates them, and suggests
choices to the DMs about the considered decision fields.
Smart Cities and Urban Logistics
Unlike the traditional field of transportation systems, new
emerging SoS are smart cities: an urban system that integrates multiple ICT tools and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions to improve the performance of the different systems
composing them. The city's assets include local departments'
information systems, schools, libraries, transportation systems, hospitals, power plants, water supply networks, waste
and postal management, and law enforcement.
One of the main challenging issues in smart cities is the
city logistics, which include traffic management, waste collection, postal delivery, infrastructure management, and
weather forecasts. City logistics are very complex and
socially and environmentally sensitive. They require dedicated and intelligent support from the decision-making
process. An urban DSS (U-DSS) that is devoted to managing the waste and postal management services in a unified
framework is proposed in [3]. The U-DSS provides the optimal routes to minimize the length of vehicle travel, and it
satisfies time and capacity constraints by taking into

account traffic and weather conditions. Because of the
large dimension of these problems, the DSS specification
requires not only new platform architectures but also novel
optimization and management techniques to find solutions
in a reasonable time and by applying management rules
in an appropriate way [3], [12]. Figure 3 shows a U-DSS
screenshot that depicts the different work shifts of the
