T

echnical committees (TCs)
are the backbone of the IEEE
Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society (SMCS). In fact, more
than 50% of SMCS members participate in the work of 57 TCs that are
spread across the Society's three
main areas of excellence: cybernetics, human-machine systems, and
systems science and engineering. All
of the committees are very active,
and the SMCS website (http://www

cybernetics) provides information
about each committee's goals, members, and recent activities as well as
a call for participation.
Senior volunteer leaders of the
SMCS recognize that our magazine
offers diverse opportunities for the
growth of TCs, and that it also fosters and enhances member awareness of the Society's areas of interest
while promoting the cross-fertilization of ideas, techniques, challenges,
and methodologies. As editor-in-chief
(EiC) of IEEE Systems, Man, and
Cybernetics Magazine, I have begun
conversations with the three area
vice presidents (VPs); with guidance
from the senior past president, junior
past president, current president,
and president-elect in collaboration
with members of the magazine's editorial board and cochairs of TCs; to
determine the best approaches to the
ultimate means for information dissemination to our readers about the
Society's technical areas.
Beginning with the April 2017
issue of IEEE Systems, Man, and
Cybernetics Magazine, technical
sections will be featured that will
promote the fields of interest in the
Society's three technical areas. This
will be in addition to the regular feaDigital Object Identifier 10.1109/MSMC.2016.2623866
