Meet Our Volunteers

Robert Kozma: New
Member of the SMCS
Board of Governors

I

EEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics (SMC) Magazine introduces Robert Kozma, a member
of the IEEE SMC Society (SMCS).
Kozma is a professor at the University of Memphis, Tennessee.
SMC Magazine: What is your current position, and what was your journey to get there?
Kozma: I am a professor of
mathematics at the University of
Memphis, Tennessee, and director
of the Center of Large-Scale Integration and Optimization Networks
(CLION) at the University of Memphis. Research in the CLION Center
is focused on developing advanced
optimization techniques based on
biologically motivated and cognitive principles in large-scale networks. I am also a visiting professor at the College of Information
and Computer Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst,
where I currently lead the new Defense Advanced Research Projects
Agency (DARPA) initiative toward
superior artificial intelligence at the
Biologically Inspired Neural and
Dynamical Systems Laboratory.
I have over 30 years of research
experience in the design, analysis,
and control of intelligent systems.
My research focuses on developing

novel artificial intelligent systems
motivated by the operation of brains.
I have an interdisciplinary approach
comprising applied mathematics, statistical physics, computer science
and engineering, neurobiology, and
cognitive science. I developed fundamental mathematical theories of
evolving random graphs and networks indicating spatiotemporal
discontinuities in the dynamics of
these systems. I lead broad interdisciplinary efforts aiming at the implementation of these breakthrough

principles for the development of
robust decision support systems in
a wide range of application areas,
including sensor networks, autonomous control and decision support
systems, large-scale data analysis
and knowledge extraction, brain networks and brain imaging, and braincomputer interfaces.
I am a Fellow of the IEEE and a
fellow of the International Neural
Network Society (INNS). I received
the INNS Gabor Award in 2011 and
was a National Research Council
(NRC) senior fellow from 2006 to
2008. My research has been supported by various agencies and corporations, including the DARPA Physical
Intelligence and Superior Artificial
Intelligence programs, the National
Science Foundation Collaborative
Research on Computational Neuroscience Program and Biological
Information Technology Program,
the NASA Revolutionary Computing Program, the Air Force Office of
Scientific Research Mathematics and
Cognition Program, the Air Force
Research Laboratory (AFRL), the
Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), the
NRC, the FedEx Corporation, and the
First Tennessee Foundation.
SMC Magazine: Tell us more
about your research interests and
contributions.
Kozma: I established the neuropercolation model, motivated by
the multilayer structure and dynamical properties of the cortex.
The key innovation of neuropercolation is that it describes criticality
in brain behavior and in the underlying brain structures. The model
operates through phase transitions
between dy na mic bra in states,

narrow-band and broad-band (chaotic) oscillations.
