Membership and
Student Activities
The Membership and Student Activities Committee currently oversees
the Student Activities Subcommittee,
Chapter Coordinators Subcommittee,
Industrial Liaison Committee, and the
Young Professionals Subcommittee.
The newly established Distinguished
Programs Committee administers
the Society Distinguished Lectures
and the A mbassador programs.
We have also established the Advisory Board of the Distinguished Programs Committee.
New Society Chapters in the IEEE
Kitchener-Waterloo Section (chair,
Rozita Dara), Tokyo/Japan Joint
Sections (chair, Hideyuki Takagi),
Queretaro Section (chair, Efren Gorrostieta), and Victorian Section (chair,
Saeid Nahavandi) were established
in 2014. In 2015, new Chapters were
formed in the IEEE Dayton Section (chair, Charles Berdanier), Portugal Section (chair, Alvaro Rocha),
and Romania Section (chair, RaduEmil Precup). In 2014, a new SMCS
Student Branch Chapter was established at the University of Cagliari
(chair, Davide Maiorca) in the Italy
Section, while Branch Chapters were
formed at the University of Technology, Sydney (chair, Changxing Ding)
in the New South Wales Section and at
Simon Fraser University (chair, Gordon Ho) in the Vancouver Section.
In May 2015, the Society membership included 3,746 IEEE highergrade members (including Graduate
Student Members), 194 IEEE Student
Members, and 27 Society affiliates.
The Society totals (with affiliates)
were 3,967 in 2015.
Technical Activities
The SMCS continues to attract
researchers from cybernetics, human-
machine systems, and systems science
and engineering. The SMCS currently
hosts 48 technical committees (TCs):
18 TCs in the cybernetics area, 11 in
the human-machine systems area,
and 19 in the systems science and
engineering area. New TCs that have
been recently established are: Big Data

Computing (2014), Logistics Informatics and Industrial Security Systems
(2015), and Cybernetics for Cyberphysical Systems (2015). Descriptions of
the TC activities and how to join various TCs are available at http://ieeesmc.

Publications
The editors-in-chief (EiCs) of our
fully sponsored transactions are
continuing with their appointments:
C.L. Philip Chen for IEEE Transactions on System, Man, and Cybernetics (2014-2016); Jun Wang for
IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics (2014-2016); and Ellen Bass for
IEEE Transactions on Human-
Machine Systems (2013-2015). In
2014, the SMCS launched the new
IEEE Transactions on Computational Social Systems (financially
cosponsored with the IEEE Computer Society) under the leadership
of George Cybenko and Eunce Santos (2014-2015).
You are reading the second issue
of our new Society magazine, prepared by its EiC Mo El-Hawary (term
2014-2015). Mo also serves as the editor of the Society newsletter (2014-
2015). Electronic access to all three
transactions is included with SMCS
membership.
Conferences and Meetings
The SMCS continues to financially
sponsor our flagship annual conference, the IEEE International
Conference on Systems, Man, and
Cybernetics (SMC). SMC 2015 will be
held in Hong Kong, China, in October
2015, while SMC 2016 will be held in
Budapest, Hungary. SMC 2017 and
SMC 2018 are scheduled to be held in
Banff, Canada, and Miyazaki, Japan,
respectively.
This year, we are also financially
sponsoring the IEEE International
Conference on Networking, Sensing,
and Control and the International
Conference on Evolving and Adaptive Intelligent Systems. We are
financially cosponsoring the 14th
International Conference on Machine
Learning and Applications, the 18th
