T

his issue of IEEE Systems,
Man, and Cybernetics Magazine was being finalized
when the IEEE and Systems, Man,
and Cybernetics Society (SMCS)
communities, among others, were
saddened by the passing of our
friend, mentor, and colleague Bill
A. Gruver (SMCS president 2004-
2005) on 29 February 2016. Earlier
indications of his health conditions
did not prepare us for the unex-
pected shocking news, as we had
met at t he IEEE I nt er n at ion a l
Conference on Systems, Man, and
Cyber netics, hosted by the City
University of Hong Kong in Octo-
ber 2015. It is somewhat ironic that
Bill's picture featured prominently
in the preceding issue of this maga-
zine. In this issue, you can read the
complete "In Memoriam" column,
which was prepared with care and
attention by our SMCS past presi-
dents Ljiljana Trajkovic (2014-2015)
and Michael H. Smith (2002-2003).
At this point, I want to share with
you our plan to publish a special
section in IEEE Systems, Man, and
Cybernetics Magazine reflecting on
Bill's technical, professional, and
